Last week I wrote about how things will never be exactly the same after the COVID-19 virus goes away. I've been thinking that maybe somethings will be better in the aftermath. We live and learn and we try to improve things as we go along. Kind of like Gomer Pyle's old saying of 'fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me'. Last Thursday I went up to New Beginnings Worship Center in Brewton as they handed out 15,000 pounds of food to the people in the community. The center plans to...

I saw a post on Facebook last week that made me laugh. Whoever originally posted it said things must be getting back to normal because they had started getting those calls informing them about their extended car warranties. I hadn't really thought about it, but I haven't gotten one of those calls in several weeks. Two days after reading the post, I got one. I got another one the next day. What I didn't miss were the political calls we would have been bombarded with a few weeks ago when Alabama...

Once the coronavirus became a pandemic and got its own name as COVID-19, there has been one constant theme – protect yourself and protect others. It started with social distancing and telling people to wash their hands. It's grown to multiple states of emergency and mandated stay-at-home orders. The snowball began to roll downhill after the NBA announced it was shutting down. The SEC basketball tournament held one night of games in Nashville and then announced the tournament would continue w...

Dr. Seuss is quoted as saying "Remember me and smile, for it's better to forget than remember me and cry." Brewton's Philippa Hamilton could have just as easily uttered those words. Ms. Hamilton died on Dec. 13, 2009, but like Dr. Seuss, she still lives in the minds of children. Both had a gift to educate and entertain young people at the same time. Their gift was really to teach children without the children really knowing they were being taught. They did it through fun. Like Dr. Seuss, people...

To quote the great Yogi Berra, it is deja vu all over again this week as we navigate ourselves through the COVID-19 pandemic. Since we first started reporting on the virus several weeks ago, I've been consistent in telling people to not pay attention to time and date deadlines, because they change daily and sometimes hourly. Cities and states will tell us some things will resume at such-and-such date, but they really don't know. They don't know because those dates are based on the best informati...
