  • Mayors ask all to fill out census

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 26, 2020

By now most people in the United States have received their 2020 census form, but many residents who get their mail delivered to post offices boxes are not on the list. Every 10 years the United States conducts a population and housing census in an attempt to get an accurate count of the people living in the country. If someone gets their mail delivered to their house, they should have already received the form. Census forms are not delivered to post office boxes. Flomaton Mayor Dewey Bondurant...

A 27-year old Monroeville man was killed and his passenger was injured in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Flomaton that left Highway 31 closed to traffic for about three hours. Samuel W. Colbert was killed after being ejected from the 2011 Jeep Cherokee he was driving. Officials with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency stated Colbert was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Zachry Alsop, 26 of Atlanta, Ga., was...

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 26, 2020

Realizing the hardship COVID-19 is and will be placing on families, the Jay Town Council voted Tuesday night to suspend utility cutoffs and waive late fees, turnoff fees and reconnect fees providing residents fill out a hardship application at town hall. Mayor Shon Owens and Councilmen Wayne Godwin and Joshua Holloway unanimously voted to suspend the cutoffs and fees during the coronavirus state of emergency. Operations Manager Eric Seib noted town hall closed its lobby Tuesday but residents...

  • Important to get in census count

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 26, 2020

As we continue to deal with COVID-19, things haven't changed much since last week. Dates you see about school starting back and other public buildings being open are good starting points, but may change any day. Alabama has tentatively moved its March 31 runoffs to July 14. I use the word tentatively because that date could change as well. County commissions and city councils have set certain dates to reopen, but we're really not sure if those dates will hold true. I attended a special meeting...

  • Curfew stands active

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 26, 2020

With school out and efforts to reduce large crowds gathering, Flomaton Police Chief Chance Thompson said his department will be stepping up the enforcement of the town's curfew ordinance that restricts the times minors under the age of 19 can be out in public. “This is to protect our kids and keep them off the road late at night,” Thompson said. “Now it is very important, especially with the current issues with minors being out of school. Our officers will be strictly enforcing this ordin...

  • State of emergencies close city halls and courthouse

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 19, 2020

Governmental bodies on the city, county and state levels have declared states of emergency in wake of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic by shutting down municipal complexes, courthouses and other government-owned properties leaving only essential services in place. The shutdowns in the area began Monday when Escambia County (Ala.) Circuit Judge Dave Jordan announced that all court cases had been canceled until further notice. He did state that the court system will remain open but no jury...

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced Wednesday morning that the primary elections scheduled for March 31 have been postponed until July 14 and the last day to apply for an absentee ballot has been set for July 9. • Baseball bats go silent in wake of coronavirus

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 19, 2020

Flomaton High School's baseball team was scheduled to begin its 'real' season today (Thursday) when the Hurricanes were to host Bayside Academy to kickoff area play. When and if those games will be played is questionable at this time as all school activities have been canceled until at least April 6 due to the coronavirus. Flomaton head baseball coach Keith Nall said he's been told there will be no practices or games until April 30 but realizes the time frame can change at any time. "The state...

  • Don't panic; make smart decisions

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 19, 2020

The one thing I've learned, especially over the past week, is that what I learn today won't necessarily be true the next day or even the next hour or so. As everybody scrambles to make decisions about how to react to the coronavirus COVID-19 things change on an hourly basis. Friday afternoon I sat down with Escambia County (Ala.) Circuit Judge Dave Jordan to see what the court system was going to do. At the time they had a court session scheduled to start Monday morning with hundreds of people...

Town workers also found a ruptured water main in the process. Ray Madden, utilities superintendent for the city...

  • ALDOT needs to fix the real problem

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 12, 2020

It's been called everything from the $20 million fishing pier to the bridge to nowhere; it's been joked about, laughed about and ridiculed for the waste of taxpayers' money that was simply wasted. I'm talking about the new bridge on Highway 41 crossing the Conecuh River in Riverview. But it's no laughing matter. It's been hard keeping up with who's to blame on the original screw-up and who's been sued. It's been hard keeping up with who's filed bankruptcy and how much money was spent and how...

Brandon Pugh, 26, 1066 McGougin Road, could face a sentence of life without the possibility of parole due to the age of the victim. • Hillary may have been biggest loser

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 5, 2020

A few takeaways from Tuesday tells me a couple of things. First, I'm glad I was wrong on my 20 percent or below voter turnout prediction. We had a whopping 33.01 percent of voters in Alabama go to the polls and 28.16 percent of Escambia County residents. You know I'm being sarcastic because it's still hard for me to rejoice and wave a victory flag with well more than half the registered voters in this state and in this county who don't vote. They apparently don't care about taxes, health care,...

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 5, 2020

Pineview Fire Chief Jay Ates said one of the first duties was...

Escambia County and Alabama Democratic voters followed the trend of other states of Super Tuesday by giving support to Joe Biden for president. Unofficial returns released by the Alabama Secretary of State's...
