If you don't know, polls in Escambia County (Ala.) will be open from 7 a.m. to 7p.m. Tuesday, March 3 for the Republican and Democratic primaries. The reason people in our area might not know we have an election coming up is because there are no local races on the ballot; our streets are not lined with political signs. We do have presidential primaries, races for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives and a few judgeships. We also have an amendment to the Alabama Constitution on the...
A 62-year old Flomaton man is behind bars for the sexual abuse of a 7-year old girl and faces a possible 20-year sentence if convicted. Stanley Dean Smith, 591 Stanley Road, was arrested by Flomaton police Feb. 21 and charged with sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12. He appeared before Escambia County (Ala.) Moye added that the old pumps were beyond repair and he and another worker drove to Beaumont, Texas, to purchase a pump. He noted the old pumps had...

Although there are no local elections on the March 3 primaries in Escambia County (Ala.) there is a very important constitutional amendment on the ballot. With no local elections, I predict a very, very, very low turnout in the county. The races for the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate highlight the ballot. I'm still trying to make up my mind on who I will vote for in those races. It won't be Roy Moore for Senate; I've got some I'm leaning toward but I'm still undecided. I'm...

Until it can get the road resurfaced and striped, the Flomaton Town Council agreed to spend up to $5,000 to put a center line on Upper Creek Road that will include a 2-foot stripe 10 feet apart for 1.5 miles. Karen Cash addressed the council Monday night saying the situation is dangerous. “Right now it's terrible,” Cash said. “There are no lines and it's very dangerous.” She said when it's raining and storming you can't tell if you are on the road. Mayor Dewey Bondurant Jr., said the town ha...

Unless it's moved to March, the next scheduled commission meeting is 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24. The agreement gives t...
An Atmore man is being held on $500,000 bond on charges of aggravated child abuse for allegedly beating a 4-year old boy to the point it caused damage to the child's liver. About 20 Flomaton residents who received elevated water and sewer bills this month will only be required to pay the minimum bill after the town discovered there was a glitch in the electronic meter reading system. Mayor Dewey Bondurant Jr., said the town discovered the wrong meter readings and after talking with Utilities Superintendent Shaun Moye, felt the best thing to do was drop it and have those residents pay the minimum bill. Moye said the town no longer physically reads the water meters...
Gregory Williams told the Flomaton Town Council he didn't think it was fair that he is being told he has to hook up to the town's sewer system when he has a septic tank that is working fine. However, the town has an ordinance that mandates residents who have reasonable access to the sewer are required to hook up. “I already have a septic tank and Shaun (Utilities Superintendent Shaun Moye) said I had to hook up or I will get my water cut off,” Williams said. “Others have septic tanks, I don't...

Poll workers for the March 3 primary elections in Escambia County (Ala.) will receive $125 after the county commission voted Monday to add $25 to the $100 per poll worker that will be paid by the state of Alabama. Prior to the 2018 election cycle, the commission voted to use local money to pay the additional $25 to poll workers. The commission also passed a resolution asking the local legislative delegation to introduce a bill to increase the pay for poll workers. No such bill was ever passed...
When Flomaton voters go to the polls Aug. 25 to elect a mayor and five council members, all ballots will be cast at town hall. The Flomaton Town Council made the decision Monday to have one polling place for the municipal election, saying it would cut costs. Councilwoman Lillian Dean said she would go along with the one voting place as long as each council district has a representative as a poll worker. Qualifying for the elections will be held from July 7 through July 21. The council voted to...
When Hilary Casey, a second grade reading teacher at Brewton Elementary School, returned from Christmas break she told them she had a secret to tell. Instead of simply telling the students her secret, she designed a puzzle that her students had to figure out. The solution to the puzzle was 'my teacher is having a baby'. "I told them it had been six years since I had a baby and I needed them to give me some advice," Mrs. Casey said. So the students' assignment was to write down what advice they...

I'm writing this column before the final vote in the U.S. Senate on whether or not President Trump should be removed from office because I'm very confident that the Republican-controlled body will find him not guilty. I don't think it will be a 'Dewey Beats Truman' episode. Trump will be acquitted and we move on toward the 2020 elections. I got a news release before the vote that Democratic U.S. Sen. Doug Jones was going to vote in favor of removing President Trump from office on both articles o...
