  • No excitement on March elections

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Jan 2, 2020

We enter 2020 as an election year but for some reason I don't feel the excitement. In about 2 months Alabama voters will be going to the polls to vote in the 2020 primary elections. That date is March 3. Florida's primary elections will be held on March 17. What happened to June primaries? My bet is that the people in Alabama wanted to be ahead of the curve in the presidential election cycle. Many times after a Super Tuesday in March the presidential candidates had been set. Alabama wanted to...

  • Pelosi gives Trump early Christmas

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Dec 24, 2019

When news first started seeping out that Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats were thinking about impeaching President Trump over his so-called quid pro quo with the Ukrainian president about holding up U.S. military aid unless Ukraine investigated and exposed Joe Biden for illegal activity, I wrote a column saying Trump probably wanted to be impeached. I talked about the old story of Brer Rabbit who acted like he didn't want to be thrown into the brier patch and even begged not to be tossed. But...

  • Girls' sports are slowly going away

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Dec 12, 2019

I remember the excitement when the Flomaton High School girls' softball team won the state championship; I celebrated with the T.R. Miller High School girls with their state basketball titles; the girls' track team at Jay claimed many state titles and the Royal girls' softball team made it to the finals. I watched for many years as my daughter played softball and could see the smiles on all the girls' faces. I grew up in an era where girls didn't have that opportunity. Even though Congress...

  • Alabama, not Balouvas, lost Iron Bowl

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Dec 5, 2019

The only thing Joseph Balouvas did wrong Saturday was going to social media to apologize to the Alabama nation after he boinked a 30-yard field goal off the goal post at Jordan-Hare Stadium, which would have given Alabama a 48-48 tie with less than two minutes to play. Many insensitive Alabama fans went to social media to criticize the sophomore backup kicker for costing Alabama the game and a possible shot at reaching the college football playoffs. As an Alabama fan my stomach hurt when he...
