    Gretchen McPherson, Ledger Staff|Mar 22, 2018

Three kayakers who launched at Fisher Landing in Century Sunday night to go fishing on the Escambia River got lost and were found after a long search and rescue by multiple agencies. “We got a call about 7:30 Sunday evening for three kayakers over from Fisher Landing,” said Jay Volunteer Fire Chief Tony Simmons. “On the way there, we got coordinates from the 911 telephone they had with them. Once we arrived, we launched boats.” Simmons said that when they went down the creek headed for the coo...

  • Natural gas line moved off of Jefferson Avenue in Century

    Gretchen McPherson, Ledger Staff|Mar 22, 2018

Residents of Jefferson Avenue in Century can breathe a sigh of relief now that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has decided to allow Florida Public Utilities (FPU) to install a gas pipeline under the sidewalk on Highway 29, following their original plan, instead of detouring through residential Jefferson Avenue. At a public meeting held Thursday, March 8, at Century Town Hall, representatives of FPU met with the Century Town Council, Mayor Henry Hawkins, residents of Jefferson Ave...

Residents of Jay have been receiving messages with the new software from the town when it will be flushing water lines and hope to have the entire system flushed out in about a week according to town employee Eric Seib Monday night. Through the flushing program, the town is doing a much better job of communicating with residents to flush the water system,” said Jay Mayor Shon Owens. “It is temporary, but we are going to stay on a flushing program until we have can determine the best long-term so...

The driver of the Ford, John Russell Williams, of Uriah, was uninjured in the crash. The crash occurred on AL 21 at the 22.1 mile marker, 12 miles south of Frisco City. • Is it time consider a county fire tax?

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Mar 22, 2018

I remember years ago, my father had a friend who was a member of the Eutaw Volunteer Fire Department in rural Greene County, Ala. They called themselves the 'chimney savers' because in many cases they could only save the chimney of a burning home and focused more on keeping the fire from spreading to other properties. Back in those days, I'm guessing the 1960s and early 1970s, volunteer fire departments like the one in Eutaw held multiple fundraisers by selling everything from ribs to cupcakes...

  • Little River park in the hands of citizens

    Our View|Mar 22, 2018

In the movie Field of Dreams they said 'build it and they would come'. It was a great movie, especially if you are a baseball fan. We see that the city of Birmingham is hoping that logic is true as leaders look to raise taxes to build a new football stadium downtown. Long gone are the hopes of Birmingham building a dome field to replace the aging Legion Field. This past Saturday, state officials gathered at Claude D. Kelley State Park, which we all know as Little River State Park, that encompasses both Escambia and Monroe counties in Alabama....

  • Schools: protecting children

    Congressman Bradley Byrne, Guest Columnist|Mar 22, 2018

For much of the year, the safety of our students rests in the hands of the faculty, staff, and resource officers at our schools. Without a shadow of a doubt, the people who know best how to protect our schools are the teachers, parents, administrators, police officers, and students in their own communities. In February, the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida resonated throughout our communities, highlighting a disturbing trend of individuals who clearly show signs of grave mental instability falling through the cracks. Sadly, this incident...

  • Governor's race is hot topic in Ala.

    Steve Flowers, Guest Columnist|Mar 22, 2018

When talk turns to politics in Alabama, it usually leads to the Governor’s race. In Alabama politics the Governor’s office is the Brass Ring. It is talked about more than anything else around coffee clubs and kitchen tables from Sand Mountain to the Wiregrass. It is comparable to college football being the king of all sports in Alabama. This infatuation with the Governor’s office is borne out in voting history. In most states the Presidential race sees the largest voter turnout, but that is not the case in Alabama where we have histo...

  • Will Trump save the Democratic party?

    Pete Riehm, Guest Columnist|Mar 22, 2018

The 2018 partisan games have begun. Well, they never seem to end anymore. There’s no period of just governing. Just a momentary reset as the parties start on the next election. Desperate to regain Congress, Democrats were willing to do “anything” to win the special Congressional election in Pennsylvania District 18. Anything! Like even run a Republican. Frantic for any good electoral news, Democrats needed a win, so they could rally the troops for the midterm elections. Like climate change fanatics, Democrats will use any outcome to swear...
