  • Let's go over this Civics issue again

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|May 31, 2018

I talked with Escambia County Circuit Clerk John Robert Fountain this week and he told me he had to send back 15 absentee voter applications Friday because those requesting a ballot filled out everything except whether they wanted to vote in the Republican Primary on June 5 or the Democratic Primary on June 5. When I talked with him last week he had already sent back three due to the same reason. Sometimes I think I'm trying to beat a dead horse to death, but I'm going to keep beating it in...

  • Honoring our own Veterans

    Our View|May 31, 2018

We stood on the lawn in front of the Escambia County (Ala.) Courthouse Monday morning as Retired Marine Col. Charles Jackson read the names of the 175 county residents who lost their lives during military duty protecting our country. We watched as surviving family members made their way to the specific memorial of the war where their relatives died. It's a touching ceremony. Jackson did say he was glad the 'honor roll' had not been increased over the past several years as fallen veterans from World War I to the current War on Teriorism where...

We are reminded of their patriotic sacrifice each Memorial Day as we pay our respects to servicemembers who have selflessly given their lives to defend freedom and liberty throughout our country’s history. From the A...

  • Shelby: one of Alabama's greats

    Steve Flowers|May 31, 2018

In my book, “Of Goats and Governors: Six Decades of Alabama Political Stories,” I suggest that based on seniority, tenure, power and prestige that Alabama’s greatest senators have been Lister Hill, John Sparkman, and Richard Shelby. Folks, Richard Shelby has probably forged to the front of that triumvirate with his elevation to the chairmanship of the Senate Appropriations Committee in April. The Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee makes the ultimate decision about how every federal United States dollar is spent. Alabama has never...

  • God made you for something better

    Pete Riehm, Guest Colmnist|May 31, 2018

It seems Pope Francis has a penchant for igniting firestorms with his unscripted comments, but the latest may be a fanciful tempest in a tea pot. He set LGBTQ passions ablaze with hopes of affirmation and fired up conservative Christians with possible apostasy when he reportedly told a gay Chilean man: “God made you that way and loves you.” Context is vitally important here. The gay man, Juan Carlos Cruz, was a victim of sexual abuse by a Chilean Priest and then maligned and ostracized by the Catholic hierarchy in Chile when they sought to den...
