  • Storm winds blow Canes to 45-6 victory

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Sep 27, 2018

Flomaton head football Coach Doug Vickery said he always gets a little scared about his team playing the night they host homecoming due to a lot of distractions that occur throughout the week. There were no distractions Friday night as the Hurricanes stormed to a 45-0 lead over visiting St. Michael Academy and went on to win 45-6 in Flomaton's first region game of the season. "I worried all week about all the distractions, the rolling, float building and staying up late," Coach Vickery said....

  • Cougars claw to take 30-20 win against Jay

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Sep 27, 2018

It was a game of two halves. Jay took an 8-0 lead into the lockerroom at the half against Escambia Academy and led 20-15 after three quarters before the Cougars outscored the Royals 15-0 in the fourth to claim the 30-20 victory. "We were up 20-15 going into the fourth and were down 23-20 and driving with under 3 minutes to play," said Jay head coach Melvin Kersey. Kersey said the Royals reached the 8-yard line before being flagged for holding and later fumbled to kill the scoring threat. "We had...

  • Back to the future in a crystal ball

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Sep 27, 2018

Several years ago, yes several, some friends and I were sitting around after watching Back to the Future, for the umpteenth time. It's one of my favorite movies, only falling a few slots behind The Outlaw Josey Wales. We talked about having a time machine and whether you had one choice – go backwards and return or for forward and return. It turned into a strange conversation. If you went forward and found out some terrible things could you come back and make corrections to prevent those terrible...

We also offer out thanks to the people who put on the Jay Peanut Festival, the Alabama Blueberry Festival in Brewton and William Station Day in Atmore. If you've never been involved with putting a festival together, we'll tell you it's hard work. We'll also tell you that the people putting these festivals on are volunteering their time to make sure everybody has a good time. This past Saturday in Flomaton, the Railroad...

  • What is tax reform 2.0?

    Congressman Bradley Byrne, Guest Writer|Sep 27, 2018

Since Congress passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act last year, the American economy is booming, and Alabama families have more money in their pockets. By lowering taxes and simplifying the tax code, we have unlocked our economic potential and made life better for hardworking Americans. The economic numbers speak for themselves: higher wages, lower unemployment, more jobs, bigger paychecks, employee bonuses, and much more. Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the average family in Southwest Alabama will see their tax bill decrease by $2,187 a year. The...

  • New ruling allows collecting online Sales Tax

    Steve Flowers, Guest Writer|Sep 27, 2018

The State of Alabama’s fiscal year begins next week on October 1. Our state’s finances are not the best in the world. However, they got a boost from the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year, The high tribunal ruled that states can collect sales tax on internet sales. This was one of the most inequitable scenarios I have ever seen. If you went to the corner hardware store or Lowe’s or Walmart to buy a hammer and paint, you paid sales tax. However, if you bought these same items online you did not. That is not fair to the store or the state. What...

  • Shameful sham to short-sheet the Senate

    Pete Riehm, Guest Writer|Sep 27, 2018

Unable to stop the inevitable confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court through the legitimate Senate confirmation hearings, Democrats threw a Hail Mary stink bomb to derail the whole process. Yes, they are trying to smear Kavanaugh, but their real targets are public opinion, the Senate process, and the rule of law. Democrats don’t really care about the alleged sexual misconduct or Christine Blasey Ford, but every day they impede the confirmation with salacious high drama is another day the tremendous successes of President...

  • Training at RR Junction Day vital

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Sep 27, 2018

Although Railroad Junction Day was a fun-filled day of entertainment, it served a dual purpose for the Flomaton Fire Department, MedStar and Chands Care 6 out of Milton. One of the highlights each year at the festival in Flomaton is a demonstration from the fire department using its jaws of life to free people trapped inside a wrecked vehicle. Crowds gather as the firemen use their tools to cut away the metal to get to the victims trapped inside. It's not only entertaining for the crowd that...

  • Century Council approves millage

    Gretchen McPherson, Ledger Staff|Sep 27, 2018

Residents will see a small increase in property taxes this year since the Century Town Council approved a resolution Monday, Sept. 17, that set the millage rate at 0.9204 for fiscal year 2018-2019. The final millage rate of 0.9204 mills is greater than the rolled-back rate. Even though the property improvements since the 2016 tornado make property values go up, the rate stayed the same. When property values rise, property taxes generate more revenue. For the total revenue generated to stay the...

    Joe Thomas, Ledger Editor|Sep 27, 2018

The Flomaton Police Department is seeking the public's help in identifying the persons or person who broke into the First Baptist Church Daycare over the weekend and stole food from the kitchen. Police Detective Chance Thompson said the break-in was discovered Monday morning. He said entry was made through a back door. He added several things were misplaced but it only appeared that food items from the kitchen were taken. Thompson said the vacant house next to the daycare was also broken into...
