With spring turkey season going at full speed right now and fishing and camping starting to get on the minds of many people it reminds me of a couple of camping trips that I went on several years ago. One of them was during the opening of Lake Stone, even though most of us lived just a few minutes walk away from the lake we decided we would camp in the campground at the lake for the opening day. The lake opened in the late 1960's so we were teenagers at the time. With the opening of the lake a couple of days away we pretty much had the...
Mrs. Essie Roberson and Mrs. Ruth Crutchfield were two ladies held in high esteem during my childhood. Why you may ask? Because they cooked and fed me some of the most delicious food outside Mama's kitchen. The two of them were the only two that ever cooked at A. D. Kelly School in Wallace Alabama as long as I was a student. That was from fall of 1947 until spring of 1956. I don't know when either of them retired from lunchroom cooking, but it was surely a loss for our beloved "Wallace". Lets look back through the memory of this farm raised...

The fish were biting Saturday, March 30, at Brewton's E.O Wilson Park, as the City of Brewton and the Brewton Fire Department hosted the annual event Fish on Fire. Crowds of kids with parents and grandparents in tow showed up to cast their reels and come up with a prize winning catfish. A select number of catfish were tagged and the kids that caught the special fish were the recipients of a new reel combo pack or a gift card to Walmart. The fire department fired up their grill and cooked over...
A trip to Dauphin Island almost invariably guarantees beautiful sunsets, white sandy beaches and friendly people who call the island home. My prior assessments of visits to Dauphin Island proved as true as a compass when a late March visit to the island brought me to the Dauphin Island Visitor Center in the Little Red School House and a meeting with Mr. James Hall, the Director, of the Dauphin Island Museum. The island always held an allure due to the fact that the first cousin of my great great...
I was recently given a copy of an article written by John C Bush about his aunt, former Century Postmaster Eva Vaughn, titled "Miss Eva: Fifty Years in the Century Post Office." Paragraphs in quotes are the words of Mr. Bush. "Miss Eva Vaughn was eighteen years old when she began work at the Alger Sullivan Lumber Company's commissary store in 1902. .... The post office occupied a cubical in one corner of the company store, and she would assist there when her duties as dry goods clerk allowed." A...
I don't remember when I became aware of that far off from Barnett Crossroads Alabama place was, but I knew I needed to see it. The need to "SEE ROCK CITY" way up in Tennessee somewhere stayed on my list of things to do and see. "Bucket list" hadn't entered the lexicon of this little country girl at that time. On top of a mountain near Chattagnooga, I planned to tour the ROCK CITY GARDEN, RIDE THE INCLINE, SEE SEVEN STATES and go deep underground at RUBY FALLS. I knew that Blue Star Highway # 31 running from Mobile to Chicago went thru Birmingha...

The sun shone on Jay, Fla., Saturday and Sunday for Opie's first annual Car Show and Crawfish Festival. The event drew crowds from all over the south to view classic and exotic cars and trucks that lined Commerce Street in Jay. Live music filled the air and lines stretched around buildings as people waited to purchase their pounds of freshly cooked crawfish. Gumbo, ice cream, hamburgers and hotdogs were also available to be purchased by festival attendees. Local vendors sold everything from...
The places where we live, just dots on a map to outsiders, hold a far greater meaning to those who occupy the dots. They are the places we have lived and loved, learned to walk, to talk, to pray, our battlegrounds, and the burial grounds of our ancestors. As much as these mapped dots matter to us, they are like the canvas of an artist and as each generation passes the canvas to the next, new colors and hues are added to the picture. This picture of our area, added to by each generation; may...
It is with a sad heart that we announce the passing of our society's matriarch, Mrs. Margaret Collier. Mrs. Collier died after a long and notable life. Her careers included social worker, school teacher and mother. She is remembered by our society as its co-founder, our first president, life-time society trustee and mother hen, as well as initiator of the National Alger-Sullivan Lumber Company Residential Historic District. During the years that I knew her, she had three great loves: her...
I lived my childhood years on an unpaved dirt road. A typical Alabama red clay dirt and gravel road. A road with no name, no direction signs, just dusty, rub board ridged in dry weather. Boggy, slippery, washed out and gully cut in rainy weather. We lived between Barnett Crossroads and Stanley Crossroads, a distance of four miles. Estimated two miles to either crossing. If we needed to explain where we lived to anyone, we simply told them to look for a white asbestos sided house with red trim and roof, half way between the two crossings. Our...

The age of antebellum river culture was already in decline at the outset of the War Between the States. Better roads and the coming of the railroad allowed easier access to distant inland areas. During the final days of the war, blue clad invaders marched through these areas during the twilight of their antebellum existence. Beginning in March 1865, General Frederick Steele's Union forces had begun the march north from Pensacola in support of General Canby's movements against Mobile. Steele...
We have ancestors that some of us are interested in past. Knowing where they came from and how they lived can sometimes help us understand how we got to where we are. When you start researching your ancestors you may find some that you will be proud of and then you may find some that you rather not know a lot about. When I first got interested in where my family came from you had to do a lot of leg work and traveling to various cities and towns checking local libraries for records of your family that may have lived in the town at one time. I...
This week, March 17th – 23rd is recognized as National Poison Prevention Week. It is the perfect time to raise awareness among families to reduce unintentional poisonings, and promote poison prevention in our corner of the world. We believe poisonings can be prevented 24/7, 365 days a year. Shockingly, 90% of all poisonings occur in the home, which is the one environment you'd think people had the most control over. Please, be sure to keep all products in their original, labeled containers, and read those labels prior to use. The main goal t...
THE MUSIC PLAYED. Our radio was dialed to any local radio station during the day for news, Farm & Market Reports and Country Music. Saturday nights the dial was set on WSM clear channel 650, for the Grand Old Opry. That was the time for Daddy and Mama to enjoy their evening of music. We listened also. Lordy I loved listening to Earnest Tubb singing, "Walking The Floor Over You". THEN. WLAC 1510 AM GALLATIN, TENNESSEE...circa 1956-,59. Our old Zenith dialed to Randy's Record Shop at Gallatin, Tennessee. 50,000 watts of clear channel. Monday...
Despite the cooler temperatures, crowds gathered Saturday, March 16 for the second annual 'Come Fly With Me Kite' event, sponsored by the city of Brewton to get children and families together and make memories. Held at Brewton's Dogwood Hills, about 100 people showed up to ride bikes and fly kites. Held by the fire department, public works and parks and recreation departments, hamburgers and hotfdogs were served to attendees....
As Dr. John Watkins and other settlers disembarked from steamboats at Holly Creek in 1813 the river culture of Southwest Alabama was already beginning to take shape. Predating Anglo settlers were Native Americans who lived in the river delta for generations before the arrival of the Europeans and who had a rich and vibrant culture of their own. The river culture that Dr. Watkins met on his journey to Burnt Corn would flourish in Antebellum Alabama until the storm clouds of the Civil War ushered in a new era of change. In a time where roads...
I have begun reading An Hour Before Daylight by Jimmy Carter. I’m not far into the book, but something he said about the town where he grew up (It’s not Plains.) caught my attention. “Archery is no longer there, except on the old maps, but it’s where I grew up and lived from when I was four years old in 1928 until the very end of the Great Depression, when I left for college and the United States Navy in 1941.” The same story carries through in the four towns that have played the biggest part in my life: McDavid, Bogia, Bluff Springs and Centu...
We camped. It was cheap and fun. Oil Embargo 1973-74 we had saved enough money to take a trip to Colorado. Lamar had been stationed at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and always wanted to show me the place that inspired him to go to college. He was an airman assigned to the motor pool and drove those big old coach buses that he shuttled the cadets to concerts and the ski areas. He saw how a fellow with a degree had the upper hand and he wanted some of that. Honorably discharged, wooed me, married me and convinced me to keep working...

During the last days of the Civil War Union troops battled Confederate troops in Baldwin County at Blakely and Spanish Fort. Simultaneously the US Army dispatched troops up the Old Federal Road in order to cut off an expected Confederate retreat from Mobile to Montgomery. Their arrival continued a long tradition of military forays along the route. The Old Federal Road began as a horse path for postal riders in 1806. The original road stretched from Georgia to South Alabama. In 1810 the US Army...
In the later part of last year, I was notified that a close friend had passed away. He and I had met at work, developed a good relationship, and by the time that we retired often met for lunch with our wives, helped each other on many home projects and shared a bit of beer. It after he passed, I discovered that during his Vietnam War service, he had earned a Bronze Star. But, he was a person who modestly recalled his military service and gallantry as a small part of his life. My father was...
