Life is full of opportunities. Sometimes those opportunities coming knocking, but in most instances people wanting to move forward need to be the ones knocking on the door and being prepared when that door opens. This past week we interviewed Cornelia Miller, who has retired with nearly 40 years from the community college, which is now Coastal Alabama. She had multiple positions during her tenure, but it was evident that that past 12 years she spent as director of the college's adult education program were the most rewarding. You can say...
At this time last year, I predicted that the upcoming year with a Democrat majority in the House would be much different. While most activity in the House centered around efforts to impeach our President, I did not let that stop me from fighting for you and our state. One of our most significant victories this year for Alabama was reforming the Medicare wage index formula. For three decades, hospitals in rural states like Alabama have been underpaid in Medicare reimbursements. Upon taking office, I began fighting for a fix. With the election...
As the new year begins, so does a Presidential election year. For several decades, in fact for most of the twentieth century, Alabamians were more interested in state and local politics than presidential politics. In fact, from 1901 through the 1950’s there were more people voting in a Democratic Primary for Governor than in a presidential General Election. The interest in national politics is a fairly new occurrence for Alabamians, and it seems to have been in correlation to the party change in the state. Donald Trump carried Alabama by o...
When news first started seeping out that Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats were thinking about impeaching President Trump over his so-called quid pro quo with the Ukrainian president about holding up U.S. military aid unless Ukraine investigated and exposed Joe Biden for illegal activity, I wrote a column saying Trump probably wanted to be impeached. I talked about the old story of Brer Rabbit who acted like he didn't want to be thrown into the brier patch and even begged not to be tossed. But...
Editor’s note: Christmas is a time to reflect on all the hopes and fears around the world. Years ago an 8-year-old girl named Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Sun newspaper saying her friends had told her there was no Santa Claus. The response, written by Francis P. Church and appearing on the Sun’s editorial page on Sept. 21, 1897, remains as appropriate today as it did those many years ago. In wishing you a Merry Christmas, The Tri-City Ledger shares this memorable letter with you. ***** We take pleasure in an...
As is my tradition, as the old year comes to a close, I like to pay homage to legendary Alabama leaders who have passed away. We lost some legends in 2019. Although he was a nonpolitical leader, Bart Starr passed away this year at 85. Starr was best known for being the quarterback of the great Green Bay Packers teams that won the NFL Championship perennially. Starr was the leader of Coach Vince Lombardo’s dynasty teams. Starr died during Memorial Day weekend in Birmingham. He left an indelible legacy that was vast and greater than just being a...
The recent years’ assault on Christmas seems to have stalled. Americans have been doggedly fighting back against yuletide political correctness and President Trump jovially declared it’s safe to wish everyone a “Merry Christmas” again. So liberated from atheist angst and liberal disapproval and even threats, Americans are making Christmas merry again! The liberal intelligentsia tried to coerce us into saying a benign “Happy Holidays” so as not to offend other religions or non-believers. Funny how Christians are demanded to show deference t...
The long awaited Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General (IG) Report is finally out. All the corruption, errors, and questionable spying uncovered by a handful of intrepid journalists and talk show hosts has been thoroughly documented. Corrupt DOJ and FBI partisan hacks did pretty much everything conservatives have suspected for almost 3 years, but Democrats are declaring vindication! Wait! What?! Yep. As we thought, the FBI used the salacious entirely fabricated DNC opposition research bought and paid for by Hillary Clinton “Steele D...
This year Democrats finally did what they have wanted to do since November 2016 – move to impeach President Donald Trump. This plan was politically motivated from the beginning, and I decided to lead the fight against it. This initial investigation into Donald Trump should never have begun in the first place. During the Obama Presidency, partisan government officials abused their power and used a phony dossier paid for by Democrat political operatives to justify the investigation. How could they run a phony investigation into then-candidate T...
Famous former television news anchor, Tom Brokaw, wrote an iconic book entitled The Greatest Generation. The 1998 book chronicles the unique character of a generation of Americans. Brokaw attempted to capture the unselfish contribution of our World War II Americans who built our marvelous country. As Brokaw says, “They will have their place in the ledgers of history, but no block of marble or elaborate edifice can equal their lives of sacrifice and achievement, duty and honor as monuments to their time.” Pete Turnham of Auburn passed away on...
Memories...What is it that spans them? I mean think about it...over the years, as you age, certain little moments get lodged in your head and your brain takes those moments and records them. They become unshakeable. They can be brought up by various things like a smell, a touch, a sight or a sound. What is it about those moments that as you go about your everyday life a certain thing comes up and instantly whisks you away on the train of ‘Memories Time Warp’ and you find yourself tra...
They simply call him 'Money'. Daquan Johnson, who led Flomaton High School to its first state football championship a year ago, is headed to Duke University in Durham, N.C., to become a Blue Devil in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Money had verbally committed to Troy University months ago. The Duke offer was just too much to pass up. He actually sent his signed letter to Duke at 7 a.m. Wednesday, two hours before the ceremonial signing at the lobby inside Flomaton High School. When I first...
You don't have to be a PETA-loving person to know what Johnathan D. Holliman is accused of doing is wrong. The Brewton man is accused of tying a tracking dog that was in pursuit of him to a tree. OK, we'll give Holliman a little bit of credit. I guess if any of us were running from the law and we had an opportunity to throw the tracking dogs off course, we'd take it. He probably didn't have the pepper used by Cool Hand Luke, but he did what he thought he should do to escape capture. Holliman apparently fled when officers arrived at a...
I remember the excitement when the Flomaton High School girls' softball team won the state championship; I celebrated with the T.R. Miller High School girls with their state basketball titles; the girls' track team at Jay claimed many state titles and the Royal girls' softball team made it to the finals. I watched for many years as my daughter played softball and could see the smiles on all the girls' faces. I grew up in an era where girls didn't have that opportunity. Even though Congress...
Since Monday's vote by the Escambia County (Ala.) Commission to name Karean Reynolds as the new chairman replacing Raymond Wiggins, who has served as the chairman for the past four years, we've been asked the question about how the commission chairman is selected. There was a time when the commission chairman ran for that spot in a county-wide election. There was also a time when each commissioner had to run county-wide for his respective seat. Devon Wiggins was the last county-wide elected chairman of the county commission and he left office i...
The only thing Joseph Balouvas did wrong Saturday was going to social media to apologize to the Alabama nation after he boinked a 30-yard field goal off the goal post at Jordan-Hare Stadium, which would have given Alabama a 48-48 tie with less than two minutes to play. Many insensitive Alabama fans went to social media to criticize the sophomore backup kicker for costing Alabama the game and a possible shot at reaching the college football playoffs. As an Alabama fan my stomach hurt when he...
We guess we all fall into the trap of realizing why students go to school. We all focus on athletic achievements, but sometimes lose focus on what's really important. In college, especially, we call them student-athletes, but we all know the majority of football and basketball recruits go to a certain school to enhance their athletic achievements instead of worrying about academics. They all have dreams of making it on the next level and making millions. Most don't. If you read most newspapers you never read about academics on the front page,...
The first true test of the Legislative branch’s impeachment powers occurred over two centuries ago in 1805. Its parallels with the current impeachment process, and the important precedent it set for determining impeachable conduct, make it worth examining today. That long-ago impeachment battle was waged against Samuel Chase of Maryland, a justice of the United States Supreme Court. The episode is a stern warning against the use of the power of impeachment for political purposes. In 1804, President Thomas Jefferson resoundingly won r...
With the lackluster impeachment hearings surely grinding to another failed attempt to depose President Trump, the Democrat media complex is again flummoxed on how to topple Trump. So finding the Orange Menace virtually invincible, they are turning their sights back to their real target, the average American people they loathe for their traditional values and they consider utterly backward and ignorant. Democrats and media despise Americans who support Trump insisting we are uninformed with misplaced trust in Trump, but what they really hate is...
I never met Lowndes County Sheriff Big John Williams. I never heard of him until this past Sunday morning when I learned he was shot to death outside a convenience store in Hayneville, Ala. I didn't know Big John, as he was called, but my heart dropped because I've known many law enforcement officers over the years that reminded me of Big John as I began to read stories and reach out to our current Sheriff Heath Jackson and former Sheriff Grover Smith. Both knew Big John. Both had become...
If your are like us, you are now receiving unsolicited telephone calls at home or on your cell phone about helping this cause or that cause. 'Tis the season'. From Thanksgiving to Christmas most of us get into a more generous feeling but sometimes we all fall victim to a scam. You may get a call to donate money to help homeless veterans, you may get a call to help the police and homeless people across this country. Don't bite and don't send money. If you get a call to help children in need during the holiday season it may touch your heart, but...
As the year draws to a close and we enter another holiday season, I’m reminded we have much to be thankful for. First, I’m thankful for those who answer the call to service at home and abroad. It’s easy to get bogged down in the never-ending news coverage of political squabbles, but the men and women of our military are doing extraordinary things to keep global threats at bay. Our country remains the freest nation in the world because of their sacrifices. Imagine for a moment living in the volatile Middle East, or in Hong Kong in an escal...
Qualifying has ended and the players are in place for next year’s elections. It is a Presidential year. It is up in the air as to who will be the Democratic presidential standard bearer. President Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee. It is a foregone conclusion that Trump will carry Alabama next November. In fact, it would be safe to say that all statewide Republican candidates on the ballot will win next year. When it comes to national and statewide contests in the Heart of Dixie, we are a one state party. If you want to win a state o...
Thanksgiving is the holiday to count our blessings, but if you are reading the news in this wicked world, it can be difficult and even depressing. Poverty is marked by the homeless defecating on the streets of our major cities. Substance abuse is still epidemic, but society responds with demands to legalize drugs. Depravity is being endorsed and glorified as a militant LGBTQ agenda is forced into every aspect of life even educating our children that gender is fluid. We still murder thousands of babies daily for sheer convenience. And nothing...
I was not raised in the south. The southern heritage was imposed on me when I moved down here. I have to admit, I have thrived under the southern tutelage, and no greater lesson was learned but that of ‘Memaw Dressing’. Now see, Memaw wasn’t my Memaw, but somehow she was everyone’s Memaw. When you walked into her kitchen on Thanksgiving, her home smelled like love, and that’s all she gave. Memaw was the type of grandma that made other grandma’s jealous. She just loved her family, friends, church...
