Cougars tame Eagles in 35-0 shutout

It was Escambia Academy's first shutout of the season Friday, Sept. 15., as the Cougars continued their winning streak defeating the Jackson Academy Eagles 35-0. EA's record now rolls to 6-0.

With a nearly balanced offense pulling in 380 total offensive yards, 177 through the air and 203 rushing, the Cougars made a clear statement over the Eagles. EA had ten different ballplayers carry the ball over the course of the game.

Defensively, EA stood up to the Eagles and refused to let them put up any points. With the stats added to EA's current record, the Cougars have had 10 shutout quarters out of the last 12 quarters that they have played.

The first quarter was dominated by the Cougar's and began with a 45-yard touchdown run by EA's Patrick McGhee (8). After a failed 2-point conversion the Cougar's pulled ahead of Jackson 6-0.

Quick to capitalize on their lead, EA's Trey Turner (7) saw some action with a 13-yard touchdown run and carrying the ball for the 2-point conversion, pulling the Cougar's ahead 14-0.

Still in the first quarter, EA's Jabe Dawe added to the lead with a 1-yard touchdown over the ground. After a failed PAT, EA held the lead 20-0.

Neither team put up points during an uneventful second quarter, and the Cougars went into the locker

room at the half with a firmly held lead.

During the third quarter, EA's Fred Flavors (3) scored on a 14-yard carry on the turf. Dawe found Cameron Bowens (9) through the air and picked up two more points, pulling the Cougars ahead 28-0.

In the fourth quarter, Turner had a 15-yard touchdown run and Daniel's added to the score when his kick was good in the PAT, putting the final 35-0 for EA.

The Cougar's Head Coach Hugh Fountain, said his team's defense was a big part of the win for EA.

"We played well by capitalizing on Jackson's mistakes in the first half," he said. "Our defense was spectacular in harassing the quarterback."

EA will host the Jay Royal's Friday with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
