The Escambia County (Ala.) Board of Education approved several bids for capital improvements and renovations at W.S. Neal High School at its Thursday, Nov. 23 meeting in Brewton.
The bids that were approved include: a bid of $194,700 from Aegis Environmental, Inc. for the emergency removal of asbestos; a bid of $185,330 from Dixie Acoustical to furnish and install acoustical ceiling grid and acoustical ceiling panels in the male athletic and auditorium buildings; a bid of $116,580 to Conrad Watson to furnish and install new mechanical ducts and exhaust fans to match the existing ones in the auditorium building; a bid of $69,435 to Conrad Watson to furnish and install new HVAC rooftop units, related controls and wiring to these units to match to the existing ones in the auditorium building; a change order in the range of $45,000 to remove the AC units form the roof of the auditorium and remove all AC equipment and duct work from the interior of the male athletic building.
“Phase 2 of the W.S. Neal High School project was the renovation of the old cafeteria,” said Knott. “We are renovating it to be used as the athletic field house and weight room.” Knott said the auditorium is also receiving a complete renovation.
“All of this was part of Phase 2 in the original project, to do the replacement and renovation of W.S. Neal High School,” said Knott. “In the process, we found other things that needed to be included or addressed so that we can move forward.”
Knott said that the auditorium at Escambia County High School in Atmore is in the final phase of completion, adding that the flooring for the stage is underway and details are being finalized.
“We cannot open the lobby yet, but we hope to have it open in the next several weeks,” said Knott. “The entire project will, hopefully, be done by the end of December.”
Knott said he was expecting someone from the Alabama State Building Commission the following day to inspect the lobby so it may be open after the Thanksgiving holidays.
In a motion made by board member Danny Benjamin and seconded by board member Mike Hoomes, the motion carried.
