Editor’s note: Christmas is a time to reflect on all the hopes and fears around the world.
Years ago an 8-year-old girl named Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Sun newspaper saying her friends had told her there was no Santa Claus. The response, written by Francis P. Church and appearing on the Sun’s editorial page on Sept. 21, 1897, remains as appropriate today as it did those many years ago.
