New race track coming to area

Day hopes to drop first flag Aug. 14

Barring weather delays, Chuck Day said he hopes to drop the first green flag at the Tri-County Speedway on April 14 at his new dirt track, located at the intersection of Highway 31 and Old Highway 31 in the Pollard-McCall area.

Day said his plans for the 29-acre spot call for multiple uses, that could include carnivals, rodeos and more.

"It's going to be family oriented fun for the entire area," Day said.

He said his plans are to hold 12 car races a year, with five classes of cars, at the new track with racing to be held from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Day noted the quarter-mile track will occupy 1.5 acres of the 29-acre tract of land. He said he is doing everything he can to halter the noise, including leaving natural buffers around the track.

The project also calls for a convenience store with gasoline near Highway 31.

"We'll have heated and cooled bathrooms and a concession stand," Day said.

Other plans call for the construction of buildings that could be rented out for smaller events, like reunions.

"I want it to be available for multiple uses," Day said. "It will be designed to host things like rodeos, carnivals, car shows and other events for the public."

While overseeing construction earlier this week, Day said he's still targeting Aug. 14 for the first race.

"Right now we're on schedule to meet that date," he said. "But weather has a lot do with being ready on time."
