Deputy's brother is arrested for car theft

The brother of an Escambia County (Ala.) sheriff's deputy has been arrested on theft charges after he allegedly took his brother's patrol car and later crashed the vehicle.

Justin Woods, 24, 225 Spears Circle, Brewton, was charged with theft of property I and booked into the Escambia County Detention Center on $10,000 bond.

According to reports, the sheriff's office received a call Sunday, Jan. 28, in reference to a sheriff's office patrol car being wrecked on Highway 29 in the Boykin-Damascus area.

Deputies responded and confirmed there had been an accident.

The investigation determined that off-duty deputy Calvin Woods was out of town and had parked his patrol car at his grandmother's house in Boykin. Justin Woods was able to get the keys and took the vehicle. The report noted Justin Woods apparently lost control of the vehicle, left the highway and struck several trees.

Deputies located Justin Woods in the area and he was taken into custody. The case remains under investigation and officials say more charges are pending.
