Brewton resident, Chris Guthrie, 19, was honored by the Boy Scouts of America's Eagle Scout Court of Honor on July 8, 2017 at Brewton First Baptist Church by being recognized as an Eagle scout. Guthrie has been a member of the Scouts since he was 6 years old. During his years of participation, Guthrie earned more than the required 21 merit badges, held positions of quartermaster, patrol leader and senior patrol leader. He is also nominated to join Order of the Arrow, a national scouting honor society.

Perhaps most impressive of his accomplishments and his Eagle Scout project, Guthrie also worked to erect a 20x40 ft pavilion at the Fisher Community Center. As part of his efforts for the pavilion, Guthrie raised over $6000 to fund the venture. He hired local businesses and organized more than 40 workers to help with the project. Guthrie spent at least 9 months on the project and personally put in 200 work hours.

In addition to scouting, Guthrie stays active in other areas of his life by being involved with his home church, Brewton First Baptist, where he participates in children's activities, VBS, camps, Awana, youth ministry and youth choir. Guthrie began taking karate lessons when he was in kindergarten and achieved the rank of second degree black belt in Yoshukai Karate.

As far as his school involvement at T.R. Miller, he played on the varsity tennis team for five years. He also was a member of the concert and marching bands all four years of high school and eventually served as section leader. Guthrie even managed to teach himself how to play bass guitar in order to join T.R. Miller's first jazz band. During his senior year, Guthrie joined the school's swim team and served as team captain.

During his school years, Guthrie was a member of several scholastic clubs including Scholars Bowl, Envirobowl, and the math team in which he not only contributed to team wins, but also won a number of individual first place awards.

Guthrie graduated T.R. Miller with honors and had completed six college courses prior to graduating. He is currently attending Virginia Tech University on a full scholarship and participates in the Corps of Cadets, Regimental Band and Navy ROTC.

Guthrie is the son of Christi Guthrie and grandson of Pat Harwell and the late Huey Harwell of Flomaton, Ala.
