Century residents gathered at a public meeting at the Century Business Center Tuesday night to discuss their ideas for what they envision for the CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency).
A CRA can be used to make improvements to a blighted area by putting a portion of property taxes back into improvements. Those improvements are determined by the CRA which is why these public meetings are important.
Hosted by the town of Century, Town Planner Debbie Nickles Peggy Fowler with Peggy Fowler and Associates presented a Power Point to the group that outlined how a CRA can improve an area that has been determined as blighted. The CRA was established in the town on Sept. 11, 2017 when the council voted to approve Nickles' request to establish it and encompasses more than 500 acres between State Road 4 to Jefferson Avenue, south of Pond Street and back up along Highway 29.
Four ways a CRA can improve an area are through capital improvements, neighborhood appearance, residential and commercial improvements and by supporting neighborhood groups.
Nickles has three other meetings scheduled on March 22, April 17 and May 24 as part of the planning process. The plan will be finalized at the last meeting in May.
