Social media rumors prompt Flomaton to beef security at schools
Flomaton police began an increased presence around Flomaton schools Tuesday and will likely continue through the week after police received information of possible threats being made on social media, but noted its own investigation revealed no threats were found.
“With concern and recent events in other states, Flomaton Police Department had an increased presence today at Flomaton schools,” Police Chief Bryan Davis said Tuesday. “This is not to alarm anyone, but for reassurance of all the children's safety with the rumors circulating on social media on Feb. 19, 2018.”
Davis said the police department was contacted late Monday afternoon about threats being made on Facebook of someone possibly bringing a knife or gun to school.
Davis said police officers looked through social media and Facebook but found no threats. He said that while no threats were found, the decision was made to increase presence at the schools as a precaution.
Chief Davis noted he has not made any statement about any threats being credible or not credible but only that that the police department investigated the possible threats on social media and found none.
“The Flomaton Police Department has not received any calls or tips about any direct or indirect threats against any student, staff or school,” Davis said. “We have confidence in the school resource officer, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, school administration, along with our department to deter any type of activity.”
Davis said Flomaton police would continue to have an increased presence at the schools for a period of time.
