Century town clerk to resign position

Century native returning to private sector in Pensacola with fond memories of Century job

Century Town Clerk Leslie Howington submitted her resignation to Mayor Henry Hawkins Monday, Feb. 26 after more than seven years as the town clerk.

Howington, a native of Century, served under three administrations; two under Mayor Freddie Wayne McCall Sr. and currently under Mayor Henry Hawkins.

"I originally returned to Century from South Florida to give care to my precious parents," said Howington. "I was so blessed and honored to be appointed clerk of my home town. Then-Mayor McCall and town council sent me clerks academy within six weeks of my appointment. One of my takeaways from this biannual intense training is that you can't use common sense to make a decision, you simply must follow the law. The core of my job involves being aware of ever-changing state laws that affect municipalities."

"All members of the town hall team have worked to modernize the flow of work and the efficiency in the office and out in the field," said Howington. "Serving our citizens has been our number one priority from day one. It is part of new employee orientation."

After serving in the public sector, Howington has accepted a position of leasing and marketing in the private sector with Lincoln Property Company. Lincoln manages two apartment communities in Pensacola, Southtowne, owned by Studer Properties in the downtown area, and Majestic Oaks in the Ferry Pass area. Howington will return to a profession that she says she thoroughly enjoyed and found great success with.

"The responsibilities of the town clerk have evolved over the last decade, and through continuing education and hard work, the town has received a return on its investment," said Howington. "This departure is bittersweet. I have such a love for Century and Centurions. I believe Century is marching toward greatness."

Howington's last day at Century will be Friday, March 9, 2018.
