Gamers win $200 at Lions Tourney

Ultimate video gaming team James Hatfield and Jordan Kent walked away with $200 Saturday, after beating other competitors lined up to show off their gaming skills at the first ever Flomaton Lions Club Ultimate Video Gaming Competition fundraiser, held at the Flomaton Community Center.

Eleven contestants showed up between 9 and 9:30 a.m. to register to compete in three games: Street Fighter 5, Call of Duty Black Ops 3 and Mario Kart 8. The gamers included Jay High School graduates Hatfield, Kentand Dylan Cumbre; Ernest Ward and Byrneville Elementary students Johnnie Howell, Camron Howell and Jade Howell; Flomaton's Roux Scroggs, Conner Sheffield, Quince McCall and Jeson Blue and Pollard McCall's Kane Hart.

Once the gamers were registered, they warmed up their fingers by playing other video games on the exterior console of the mobile video game truck provided by On Sight Entertainment. The bus features screens, a sound system, different types of games and controllers, plus a double seating area for others to watch.

This fundraiser was the first of its kind for the Flomaton Lions Club, and although it was not as successful as was hoped, Lions Club President Ruth Harrell has not given up on having another one in the future.

“We have learned with this first go at a video gaming competition,” said Harrell. “We were hoping for more competitors, but now we can step back, regroup, see what we did right, what we can do better, and maybe give it a second chance in the future.”

The club will focus on an upcoming reception for Flomaton Lion Charles Bowles for 60 years a Flomaton Lion, scheduled for Tuesday, March 27 at the Flomaton Community Center and a Pancake Supper on Monday, April 30, 2018.
