Rollins pleads guilty to killing Harris

Atmore man enters blind plea to manslaughter in shooting death of Flomaton teenager

An Atmore man originally charged with murder in the shooting death of 18-year old Flomaton resident Kenneth Harris, Jr., has entered a blind guilty plea to manslaughter and faces a prison term of two to 20 years when he's sentenced on May 23.

Escambia County District Attorney Steve Billy said Devonta Deshawn Rollins, 21, 159 East Ashley St., Atmore, admitted in the plea agreement to killing Harris. Billy said under the blind plea, the state makes no recommendation for sentencing, which will be held before Circuit Judge Bert Rice in May.

Flomaton police officers were originally dispatched to 58 Lender St., on April 19, 2016, where they found Harris' body. Reports state he died from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head.

In addition to the Flomaton Police Department, officers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the State Bureau of Investigations and the FBI conducted the investigation into Harris' death.

Officers originally responded to the Lender Street address at 12:44 p.m. and discovered the body, along with a .38-caliber revolver believed to be the murder weapon.

At the time of the incident, Flomaton Police Chief Bryan Davis said when officers arrived at the scene they observed two people exiting the residence, with Rollins being identified as one of those persons.

Davis said during the investigation, officers learned Rollins and Harris had a history of altercations within two weeks of the murder. Davis also said Rollins was described as the boyfriend of Harris' sister.
