Join us at Sawmill Day in Century

The Alger-Sullivan Historical Society invites you to our 7th Annual Sawmill Day and Car Show at Century – Saturday, May 5th! This will be the society's 28th annual heritage festival fund raiser held every year in the historic district of Century. As always, the event and parking are free.

Parking will be available in the old ball field at the end of Front Street, directed by members of Northview High School's J.R.O.T.C. Visitors can then tour the car show as they make their way to the festival grounds a block away at Houston Jones Park. Good weather always promises more than fifty beautiful classic and custom vehicles to our car show. A trolley will be available for the return trip and some handicapped parking will be provided near the grounds on 4th St. for those unable to walk a block.

The festival will kick off with a flag raising ceremony at 8:30 near the bandstand. At our band stand will be all day entertainment from local dance organizations, gospel singers, and heritage singing groups like the popular Sawmill Band. Flomaton's and Century's beauty pageant winners will also be on hand to meet the crowds during the day and will present trophies to the car show winners at 3pm.

This year's invited exhibits include arrow head makers, antique bottle collections, Alabama potter Matt Brabbon creating unique pieces on his foot powered wheel, the West Fla Wood Carver's Club, The Canoe Ala. Sons of Confederate Veterans, the traveling museum of the NW Fla. Living History Association, and Flomaton's Turtle Point nature center. We will also be attended by other historical societies around the region who will be happy to tell of our area's history. Our society's own museums will be open with nine rooms of local memories including a new display of grist mills, a local brick manufacturing history, and a display of wood tools. Also, a display of exhibitors and winners from Flomaton High School's 2018 History Fair along with a special heritage photo exhibit will be in our main building.

For several years our own Ms. Agnes Grant has created challenge games in the park for adults and children which lead to cash prizes, don't miss your chance. And, for the shopper we expect a good attendance of local vendors selling wares. The society will also be selling freshly grilled hamburger meals to guests and few can pass up Century's Masons with their freshly cooked fried pig skins.

If you would like to enjoy a comfortable day of friendly faces, good entertainment, and interesting stuff, join us Saturday, May 5th. And, donations are always appreciated.
