Festivals highlight area this weekend

Sawmill Day, Mayfest, Reimagine Century

With a forecast of good weather for this weekend, events in Century and Atmore will kick off Saturday morning in Century with the Saw Mill Day and Car Show at 8 a.m., and continue with both Reimagine Century and Mayfest in Atmore starting at 9 a.m. The town of Century will have a shuttle that will be delivering guests between the two events in Century.

The 7th Annual Sawmill Day and Car Show at Century will start around 8 a.m., Saturday, May 5th in conjunction with the Alger-Sullivan Historical Society's 28th annual heritage festival in the historic district of Century until around 4 p.m. The winners of the car show will be announced at 3 p.m. and the prizes will be presented by the Miss Saw Mill Beauty Pageant winners.

There will be more than fifty classic and custom vehicles at the car show. Century Correctional Institute will be set up and have applications available for seeking those interested in employment with the Florida Department of Corrections.

Live entertainment from local dance and singing groups like the popular Sawmill Band, Melissa Majors Dance Group, Ray's Chapel Gospel Singers, Pete Matheny, Heavenly Trio, and others will be on the band stand throughout the event.

Others who will be there include Amy Boutwell with Amy's Awesome Faces, Kevin McKinley, Shelley Welch and Friends, Mervin Gibson with homemade syrup, Century's Masons selling freshly cooked fried pig skins, and many, many more.

This year’s invited exhibits include arrow head makers, antique bottle collections, Alabama potter Karen Allen, Munson’s fur trapper museum, the West Fla. Wood Carver’s Club, The Canoe, Ala. Sons of Confederate Veterans, the traveling museum of the Northwest Fla. Living History Association, with museums open with 9 rooms of local memories. Also, a display of exhibitors and winners from Flomaton High School’s 2018 History Fair along with a special photo exhibit will be in the main museum. For more information, contact 850-256-3980.

Reimagine Century will be from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Saturday, May 5, at 440 East Hecker Road in Century.

All activities offered are free and include children’s activities such as inflatables, face painting, popcorn, coloring contest where three winners win new bicycles, games, a 15,000-pound free food giveaway, free baby diaper giveaway, free clothing giveaway, free 'train' rides for children, free HIV testing, free lunch provided, free paper products, virtual welding trailer/tiny house, free haircuts and more.

Community agencies will distribute information about their programs and how theymay be able to help fight poverty and also how they might help to meet the other needs of the community. Many community and state agencies sponsor this event and will be present.

Festivities continue in Atmore at Mayfest, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 5, at Tom Byrne Park and feature a day of fun-filled family activities.

There will be arts and crafts, food and live entertainment all day from the gazebo stage.

There will be activities for the kids including children’s rides, rock climbing walls, and games, the Williams Station train ride, pony rides, face painting, and much more.The Beautiful Baby Contest will showcase babies and toddlers ages 3 months through 3 years of age. The new Inaugural Miss Mayfest Pageant is for ages 4 to 18 with overall and optionals winners for each division. New this year also is the Mayfest Softball tournament open to all players ages 18 and older, male and female.
