Holmes gets quick fix for parking issue

We applaud Flomaton Elementary School Principal Diane Holmes for at least temporarily solving the parking issue behind the school.

Last week we showed you cars packed in there tight as sardines, by Thursday afternoon cones and tape had been placed to restrict parking next to the elementary school.

Our issue was a safety issue. We felt there was no way a fire truck could get to the elementary school the way the cars were parked. As we stated, the best case scenario would be some teachers' cars getting damaged by firemen dragging fire hoses across them. We don't want to bring up the worst case scenario again of an elementary school on fire with children inside.

Holmes not only had the cars moved and the cones placed, She reached out to help find a permanent solution to the parking problem.

We understand the parking issue at the elementary school got worse when construction began on the concession stands at the high school, but there was still a safety issue.

Holmes has reached out to Flomaton Mayor Dewey Bondurant Jr., to help create some teacher parking on the east side of the building that's not available now due to a drainage ditch.

Asphalt behind the elementary school to handle about 10 parking spots could be an option, but the playground area is shrinking due to the school buses being parked there.

“We're going to put our heads together and come up with a solution,” is what Holmes told us.

We thank her for addressing the immediate issue and trust she will do what is best for the students and faculty.
