Sylvia Cook Koon, 98, of Brewton, died Sunday, May 20, 2018.
Mrs. Koon was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Damascus, Ala. to Irvin George (I.G.) Cook and Ola Lambert Cook and attended Damascus school through the 11th grade. She boarded in Brewton for her senior year and graduated from T.R. Miller High School, afterward attending Troy State Teacher's College for two years to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a teacher. She began teaching at the age of 18, later earning her bachelor's degree. She was a member of Damascus Baptist Church and then First Baptist Church of Brewton.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 24, at Williams Memorial Chapel with Rev. Sonny Steele officiating. Burial followed at Damascus Cemetery with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.
Mrs. Koon is survived by one daughter, Ellen (Don) Dunson of Brewton; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and other friends.
Mrs. Koon was preceded in death by her husband, Cyrus C. Koon; and one sister, Mildred Cook Green.
