Sylvia Smith Hart, 77, of Daphne, died Wednesday, May 23, 2018.
Mrs. Hart was a native of Canoe, Ala. and attended Canoe Public Elementary School and Escambia County High School in Atmore. She later earned a bachelor of arts degree with a double major in journalism and English from Samford University in Birmingham in 1962. Employed for more than 36 years by the Mobile Press-Register, she worked as a reporter, copy editor and page designer. She received numerous certificates and plaques from local, regional and state organizations for news coverage in the fields of health, religion and education. Among those were the Press Club of Mobile in 1980, the Alabama Eye and Tissue Bank in 1991, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama in 1971, 1986 and 1990, the Alabama Public Health Association in 1992, the Alabama State Nurses' Association in 1987, the Mobile County Nurses' Society in 1986, the Mobile Mental Health Center in 1970, the Mobile County Chapter of American Red Cross in 1985 and 1986, the Alabama Baptist State Convention in 1974, the Conference of Downtown Churches of Mobile in 1983, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Mobile in 1983, the Right to Read Effort of the Catholic Diocese of Mobile, circa 1970's, the Mobile Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa Educators Association in 1977 and the Alabama Interdenominational Seminary of Mobile in 1982.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 26, at Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery in Wawbeek community. Burial followed with Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home directing.
Mrs. Hart is survived by two brothers, J. Michael (Janice) Smith of Canoe and D. Max (Marie) Smith of Hurtsboro, Ala.; two nephews, Ben (Becca) Smith of Canoe and Brian (Rita) Smith of Birmingham; one niece, Anita Marie (Paul) Hitchcock of Gulf Breeze; and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces and other family members and friends.
Mrs. Hart was preceded in death by her parents, King and Olvena Smith.
