Planning a trip this summer? Sure, that’s what vacations are all about.
But, fun all goes by the wayside if you take a vacation from diabetes control.
Some careful pre‐travel planning can help you manage your diabetes while on the road and allow you to get the most enjoyment out of your vacation.
First, you want to request a letter from your physician stating your medical condition and a list of medications.
Next, get prescriptions for medications, insulin, syringes, etc., and have all syringes and vials of insulin clearly marked with the pharmaceutical printed label that identifies the medications. You may even want to take copies of the prescription with you.
It is best to keep all medicines in the original pharmacy labeled packaging. Keep all the diabetic supplies together in a bag, so that when the need arises, you can reach them at one time.
Find out in detail what changes are needed in insulin and meal schedule if you plan to travel across more than three time zones.
Carry a copy of your medical insurance card in your wallet and be sure to wear a diabetes ID bracelet or necklace or carry an ID card.
In addition, carry twice the number of diabetes supplies you plan to use in a carry‐on bag in case your luggage is lost or your flight is delayed.
Always carry nonperishable food (packaged cheese and peanut butter crackers, dried fruit, diabetic snack bars, and water) in case of travel delays.
Be prepared for a shift in your blood glucose levels, with a change in your schedule and excitement your levels may change.
Oh, let’s not forget about the heat (depends on where you are going), be prepared for dehydration factors.
Lastly, if you or your child with diabetes will be attending a water or theme park, pack your insulin and other supplies in waterproof bag.
Always avoid direct sunlight and don’t freeze your supplies.
Just a little pre-planning can help prevent travel nightmares and have you and your family having an enjoyable vacation.
Remember, those with diabetes can have a life too, life is not over.
