Residents in both towns heading to polls Aug. 28 to tap leaders
The towns of Jay and Century will hold their Primary Elections on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018.
Jay residents will decide on who will fill two council seats, one left by the death of Councilman Chubby Haveard in 2017, and the other currently filled by Interim Mayor Shon Owens, who stepped up to the mayor seat following Kurvin Qualls' resignation last September.
Councilwoman Jane Hayes and David Bush were appointed to the council to fill Haveard and Owens' empty council seats. All three terms end in October 2018. Owens is running for mayor unopposed. Voters will see on the ballot contenders Nina Hendricks, current Councilman David Bush and Josh Holloway vying for the two council seats. The two candidates with the highest number of votes will win the two council seats.
Since there is no more than one challenger for each seat, there is no need for a runoff election.
Voters can cast their votes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Tuesday, August 28, at the Linda Carden Community Center, located at 5259 Booker Lane.
Any registered and qualified voter in the city limits of Jay may vote using a vote-by-mail ballot. Requests can be made for a single election or for all elections through the next two general elections. When requesting a vote-by-mail ballot, voters must provide their name, date of birth, residence address and mailing address. In addition, the voter's signature is required if using a written request. The voter's immediate family or legal guardian may also make a request if instructed by the voter.
A vote-by-mail ballot can be requested the following ways: on the supervisor of elections website; by calling 850-983-1900; by emailing Supervisor of Elections Tappie Villane; by faxing a request to 850-983-1829; or in person at the main office located at 6495 Caroline St., Suite F in Milton, Fla.
Century election
The Century Town Council has three seats with terms that will expire in January 2019.
Councilman Ben Boutwell will run against contender Emanuel Oneil Dubose for seat 3.
Councilman Gary Riley has announced he will not seek re-election for seat 4. Contenders for that seat are Mary Bourgeois, John Brian Johnston and James Edward Smith, Jr.
Councilwoman Sandra McMurray Jackson will run unopposed for seat 5.
Seat 4, which has more than two candidates running, will be subject to a runoff election on Nov. 6, 2018.
The voter registration deadline is Monday, July 30, 2018 and early voting is scheduled from Saturday, Aug. 18 through Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018.
The voter registration deadline for the General Election is Tuesday, Oct. 9 2018 and early voting is scheduled from Monday, Oct. 22, 2018 through Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018.
