A Castleberry woman was charged with felony DUI and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia after she was found passed out behind the wheel of her vehicle on the shoulder of London Road.
Angela Charlene Bell, 46, 180 Janice Lane, Castleberry, was booked into the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton Saturday after being released from D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital. The felony DUI charge notes it was Bell's “fourth or subsequent conviction” for driving under the influence.
According to reports filed with the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff's Office, Deputy Chris Hallford was dispatched to London Road near the Highway 31 intersection about 7 p.m. Saturday in reference to a motor vehicle accident.
Hallford reported when he arrived at the scene he found a white Toyota Corolla on the shoulder of the road with a female driver passed out inside with the vehicle still in drive. Halford reported the vehicle was not wrecked. He noted he could smell a heavy odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle and saw several open beer cans in the passenger floorboard.
The report notes Hallford and Emergency Medical Service paramedics were able to wake the female up, who was later identified as Bell.
Hallford said as Bell talked to him and paramedics her speech was slurred and her eyes were bloodshot. He also noted when she got out of the vehicle she was unable to stand without assistance or leaning against the vehicle.
According to the report, Bell told paramedics she had taken some pills and drank four beers. She refused medical treatment until Hallford told her she was going to be arrested, then she started complaining her neck was hurting and wanted to be transported to the hospital.
Prior to having her vehicle towed, Hallford reported he did an inventory and found a pink and white makeup bag that contained a glass pipe used to smoke methamphetamine with a very small amount of residue inside the pipe.
After the vehicle was towed, Hallford traveled to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital and when he arrived Bell was being discharged. Hallford then arrested her on the DUI and paraphernalia charges.
