Greenville man faces drug charges

A Greenville man stopped for speeding was arrested on felony drug charges involving marijuana and Ecstasy.

Escambia County Sheriff's Office Deputy Samuel Weeks was on patrol shortly after 8 a.m. Monday driving south on Highway 21 near Poarch Road when he observed a sliver car passing other vehicles heading north. A radar check revealed the car was traveling 61 mph in a 45 mph zone and Weeks initiated a traffic stop.

Weeks reported when he made contact with the driver, identified as Joshua Trumaine Bogan, 29, 328 Linda Ave., Greenville, he could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The officer asked Bogan if there was anything in the vehicle that was not supposed to be and Bogan reached toward an ashtray in the cup holder in the center console. Weeks told Bogan to stop reaching and asked him what was in the ashtray. Bogan said marijuana.

Bogan exited the vehicle and Weeks asked him if there was anything else illegal in the vehicle and he replied “no”.

Weeks reported seeing a bag sticking out from under the driver's seat of the vehicle and inside the bag were four plastic bags containing a green leafy substance later identified as marijuana. Weeks also reported he found a black, plastic container inside the bag that contained three pills and a partial pill of different colors. A field test on the pills turned up positive for Ecstasy.

A further search of the vehicle revealed a set of scales in the front seat.

Bogan was placed under arrest and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana I, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also issued citations for speeding, driving without a license and not wearing a seatbelt.
