A traffic stop Sunday morning in Riverview led to the arrest of an Alabaster man on misdemeanor drug charges but a computer check revealed the suspect had outstanding felony warrants in Shelby and Jefferson counties.
Escambia County Sheriff's Office Investigator Deric Smith was working traffic on Highway 41 South shortly before noon Sunday when he noticed a silver car traveling north at a high rate of speed. Reports note Smith activated his radar and clocked the vehicle doing 71 mph in a 55 mph zone. The officer turned around and activated his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop.
Smith reported when he approached the vehicle he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. Smith identified the driver as Timothy Moultrie, 27, of Alabaster. The officer asked Moultrie to retrieve the marijuana and he pulled a small sack of a green, leafy material from the front of his pants.
A computer check revealed Moultrie had an active felony warrant for violation of probation and a bond revocation warrant out of Shelby County and a felony stalking warrant out of Jefferson County. The dispatcher notified Smith that the Shelby County Sheriff's Office would extradite Moultrie.
Moultrie was issued a citation for speeding and driving while his license was suspended and arrested for a misdemeanor charge of unlawful possession of marijuana II. He was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center and bonded out on the marijuana charge but is still being held waiting for Shelby County to extradite him to face charges in that county.
