The Escambia County (Ala.) Board of Education unanimously approved to award bid for a Roof Over System for the Completion of W. S. Neal High School to Johns and Kirksey in the amount of $1,236,000, with a proposal B and alternate of $1,259,000 less the deduction for custom color match of $23,000.00 at its Thursday, July 26 meeting.
Knott said he has asked the architect to seek cost savings out of the original bid and that the color match allowance would help reduce costs. He said he talked with several roof manufacturers, including Walter Thompson and felt that a color match was possible.
“We are working on a resolution of the electrical issues involved in Phase 2 and punch list of the project,” said Knott. “I have spoken with electrical contractors at Bagby and Russell Electric in Theodore about replacing the breaker and that will deduct $17,000. I'm having other subcontractors come to give a price, but I have no resolution at this time.”
Knott said he has contacted Mullin Hardware and Door Company about new doors, as the old doors are too damaged to use, but they gave a high bid, so he is exploring other options.
'We could save $57,000 doing the work instead of contracting it out,” Knott said. “But the safety door units issue is still not resolved.”
The following items were also unanimously approved by the board: approval to extend the beverage bid awarded to Trident Beverage for one year from Aug. 1, 2018 to July 31, 2019; approval for the Escambia County School System to enter an agreement with NOLA Education for a period of one year for a NOLA Education Star Academy at one school location in the Escambia County Alabama School System. A 2019 At-Risk High Hopes Grant request for STAR Program has been approved by the ALSDE for the amount of $300,000 that will provide full funding for this agreement. Star Academy is a school-within-a-school, providing a comprehensive dropout prevention curriculum targeting at-risk and disengaged students. The Program utilizes a rigorous progression of instruction that incorporates hands-on learning, individualized instruction, collaborative learning, team-based instruction, and real-world career connections. The goal of the program is to re-engage struggling students that may be overage and up to a year behind academically and prevent them from dropping out.
The next school board meeting will be at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 23, at Brewton Central Office.
