Excel senior and his father killed in I-65 crash Tuesday

Mother underwent surgery Wednesday

Tributes flooded social media Wednesday morning as news of the deaths of an Excel High School senior and his father spread.

According to Alabama State Troopers, a single vehicle crash at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday claimed the life of Nathan R. Ivey, 17, and his father, Conan L. Ivey, 42.

Conan was pronounced dead on scene, while Nathan was transported to Sacred Heart in Pensacola, Fla. where he died from his injuries.

They were killed when the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe they were riding in left the roadway and struck a tree.

The driver, Nathan's mother Elizabeth, 42, was injured and transported to Sacred Heart, where she underwent surgery Wednesday morning. No update on her condition was available as of press time.

The crash occurred on Interstate 65 at the 60.2 mile marker, three miles north of Atmore.

Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate. Corporal David Turman worked the crash.

Nathan, who was a member of the Excel Band of Gold, was described in social media tributes as a "loving" and "sweet person."
