Flomaton head football Coach Doug Vickery said he always gets a little scared about his team playing the night they host homecoming due to a lot of distractions that occur throughout the week. There were no distractions Friday night as the Hurricanes stormed to a 45-0 lead over visiting St. Michael Academy and went on to win 45-6 in Flomaton's first region game of the season.
"I worried all week about all the distractions, the rolling, float building and staying up late," Coach Vickery said. "But the kids responded very well and stayed focused."
He now hopes players from Escambia County High School will be a little distracted this Friday night when the Hurricanes travel to Atmore to take on the Blue Devils for their homecoming.
"This is the best Atmore team I've seen in about 10 years," Vickery said. "They've done a fantastic job. They are well coached and very disciplined and they play with a lot of fire and speed. No doubt it will be the best team we've faced all year."
With Flomaton in 3A and Escambia County in 4A, Vickery said he's looking forward to the challenge.
"They look like a 4A playoff team," Vickery said. "It's not a region game, but it's a game we're excited about. It will be a big test and we need that as we jump into the heart of our region schedule."
Friday night's game was never in doubt, but Coach Vickery did dig into his game of tricks at the end of the first drive.
The Hurricanes drove inside the St. Michael 5-yard line, but a couple of bobbled snaps and an illegal man downfield had Flomaton facing a third and goal from the St. Michael 18-yard line. After an incomplete pass the Hurricanes faced fourth down from the 18. Quarterback Daquan Johnson tossed to Da'Shun Odom, who in turn hit Tristan James in the end zone for the touchdown. The PAT failed, but Flomaton led 6-0 with 7:45 left in the first quarter.
Odom picked off a St. Michael pass on its first possession and returned the ball to the 3-yard line. Johnson then carried it into the end zone and the Canes were up 12-0 with 6:57 left in the first quarter.
After forcing a punt, Flomaton began another march that was capped on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Quincie McCall. The PAT failed, but Flomaton took an 18-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Another Odom interception set up 3-yard touchdown run by Johnson and Odom added the PAT to give Flomaton a 25-0 lead with 8:24 left in the half.
On St. Michaels next possession they were forced to punt and a bad snap allowed Jonathan Jones to make the tackle to give Flomaton a first down at the St. Michael 20-yard line.
Odom hauled in a pass to the 1, but a delay of game penalty backed the Hurricanes up to the 6. Johnson then took in it from there. Following Odom's PAT, Flomaton led 32-0 with 6:02 left in the half.
Odom was on the receiving end of a 38-yard touchdown pass from Johnson with 3:06 left in the half. The PAT failed and the Hurricanes led 38-0.
Devonta Bradley wrapped up the Flomaton scoring with 27 seconds left in the half on a 10-yard run. Odom added the PAT and the Hurricanes took the 45-0 lead into intermission.
St. Michael's lone touchdown came on a 31-yard pass with 11:50 left in the game for the final score of 45-6.
"It was a great atmosphere here on homecoming night and we got to play a lot of young people in the second half that will help us down the road," Coach Vickery said.
