Jay falls in 35-0 to Baker Friday in key ball game

Despite little production from its offense, Jay found itself only trailing Baker 7-0 at the half Friday night, but the Gators erupted for 28 unanswered points in the third quarter to blow past the Royals 35-0.

“Offensively, we struggled,” said Jay head coach Melvin Kersey. “Defensively, we had a hard time tackling their running back.”

“We had some receivers wide open is space, but we'd either drop the ball or couldn't get it to them,” Kersey said.”

Jay ended the night zero for nine passing for no yards. Jay ended the night with 74 yards of total offense with James Eddings picking up 66 yards on 23 carries. Connor Roberts had 16 yards on four carries and Stone Brown had 9 yards on two carries.

Baker took the 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 23-yard touchdown pass and following the PAT, led 7-0.

“We felt good at the half only trailing 7-0 when we knew we didn't play very well,” Kersey said.

Baker opened the flood gates in the third quarter scoring on four touchdowns on a 51-yard run, a 19-yard run, a 54-yard pass and an 11-yard run.

The Gators ended the night with 439 yards of total offense, picking up 262 yards rushing on 30 carries and another 177 through the air on a six-for-eight passing.

Kersey said the Royals need to put the game behind them and focus on their next foe, which will be Northview as Jay travels to Bratt to take on the Chiefs for Northview's homecoming.

“They had last week off so they should be rested and healed,” Kersey said. “We've just got to cut down on mistakes and play like we are capable of playing.”
