Cougars maul Hooper for 47-14 win

Patrick McGhee rushed for 258 yards on 18 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead Escambia Academy to a 47-14 win at Hooper Academy last Thursday night, moving the Cougars' record to 5-2 on the season and 3-0 in region play.

The Cougars will host South Choctaw Academy this Friday night for homecoming.

McGhee opened the scoring for the Cougars early in the first quarter on a 74-yard put return for a touchdown. Sam Martin added the PAT and EA had the early 7-0 lead.

Jason Davis then scored on a 6-yard run. The PAT was no good, but EA had stretched the lead to 13-0.

Hooper Academy found the end zone late in the first quarter on a 29-yard pass from Dakota McGhee to Corey Reynolds. The PAT was good and EA's lead was cut to 13-7.

The Cougars' Daughtry McGhee scored on an 8-yard run early in the second quarter and Jabe Dawe carried the two-point try into the end zone to give Escambia Academy a 21-7 lead.

That lead would stretch to 27-7 when Patrick McGhee scored on a 5-yard run. The PAT failed.

Hooper's McGhee then hooked up with Grant Tyson on a 52-yard scoring pass and Hooper added the PAT go make the score 27-14 at the half.

Patrick McGhee added touchdown runs of 32 and 21 yards and Daughtry McGhee had a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to make the final score 47-14.

Patrick McGhee's 258-yard rushing performance pushed him past the 1,000-yard marker for the season.

“The two touchdown plays for Hooper were really the only two positive plays for their offense the entire night,” said EA head coach Hugh Fountain.

Fountain also praised the effort of Tyler Newton, Nolan Linam, Jason Davis and James Williams on the offensive line.

“The offensive line played its best game of the season,” Coach Fountain said. “Thursday games are not routine and for us to go on the road and play like we did in a region game is important.”
