Vehicle plunges into lake Tuesday night
A single-vehicle crash on Old Flomaton Road Tuesday night has claimed the life of a Brewton man.
Former W.S. Neal student Jordan Cooper, 37, was killed when the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado he was driving ran off the roadway and collided with a power pole and continued to travel down an embankment, colliding with a tree line that surrounded a large body of water, according to a Florida Highway Patrol press release.
"Century Fire Department was dispatched to a call of power lines down," said Century Fire Chief David Adams. "When Century Fire responded, we found a vehicle that took out a power pole, continued down the road a distance, left the right of way, and went into the lake."
The vehicle entered the water where it became submerged, 10 feet from the shoreline facing west.
The Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriffs Department's dive team entered water and determined the driver, later identified as Cooper, was in the vehicle. Cooper was pronounced dead on the scene.
It is unknown if Cooper was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol continue to investigate.
