Baker Block Museum has much to offer

Several ASHS members spent Saturday, November 3rd at the Baker Block Museum. We greatly enjoyed their Festival, but there is much to see and enjoy there on non-festival days.

The Baker Block Museum is open 10 am to 3 pm Tuesday through Friday and on the 3rd Saturday of the month. The main museum is filed with well crafted displays showing area business activities of the past as well as scenes and mementos of everyday life in the area. I only had time for a brief visit in the main museum on the 3rd, because I was needed in the ASHS booth. I will be returning when I have more time to properly enjoy and learn from the exhibits.

In addition to the main museum they have a village of vintage buildings they have moved to their property and arranged: a farmhouse and outbuildings (including vintage farm equipment), a post office, blacksmith equipment, and the tool house from Jackson Veneer Mill which was in operation in Laurel Hill from 1946 to 1991.

I think you'll find a visit to the Baker Block Museum a good use of time. It is located on Hwy 4 about an hours ride from Century. There are several good restaurants in the area. It's a good place to make a day trip with your family and/or friends.

We will be at the Canoe Community Homecoming on Saturday, November 17th.

ASHS will have our Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday, November 20th. If you are coming, please bring a side dish. Turkey is being provided. All are welcome.

Other events coming up at ASHS are our Christmas celebration on Tuesday, December 18th and our Annual Business Meeting on Tuesday, January 15th.

Our museums and bookstore are open Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. (They may not be opened on the 17th as we will be at the Canoe Community Homecoming on that Saturday.) In addition to books our bookstore has wooden toys (trains, log trucks, airplanes, helicopters, tractors, and numerous smaller cars, trucks, tractors, airplanes and helicopters ranging in price from $4 to $25. We also have handmade and vintage jewelry, $3 to $5. In addition to displays about the history of the Alger-Sullivan Sawmill, our museums also have displays about Century and Carver High Schools, the Turberville Memorial Hospital, the Century Drive-In, our area citizens who have served in the military, and artifacts from everyday life in our area. They are open anytime by appointment. Call me (850-417-9803) and I will arrange to have the buildings open for you.
