With Adkinson absent, Sunday sales get unanimous support
For the third time the Flomaton Town Council has voted to ask the Escambia County legislative delegation to pass a local bill to allow the sale of alcohol on Sundays with Tuesday night's vote passing 5-0 with Councilman Roger Adkinson being absent.
At the council's Aug. 13 meeting the council voted 5-1 in favor of Sunday alcohol sales with Adkinson voting no. The council then learned from State Rep. Alan Baker that the town needed to pass a resolution instead of an ordinance and also said if it was not a unanimous vote by the council it would make it difficult for the delegation to go forward in the Legislature. In addition to Baker, Escambia County is represented by State Rep. Mike Jones and State Sen. Greg Albritton.
The council passed a resolution at its Sept. 12 meeting on the same 5-1 vote to allow Sunday alcohol sales with Adkinson voting no.
At that meeting Adkinson said “I cannot sit here as a Christian and a deacon and vote to sell alcohol a block from our church. I'm not going to vote for it.”
Mayor Dewey Bondurant Jr., said the reason he brought the issue to the council table was the revenue the town was losing to Century which allows Sunday alcohol sales. Flomaton currently sells alcohol Monday through Thursday.
Now with a unanimous vote, the council will forward the request to the legislative delegation.
