Devonta Bradley intercepted three passes and caused two fumbles while Daquan Johnson ran for five touchdowns to lead Flomaton to a 40-14 win over Montgomery Academy Friday night in the opening round of the Class 3A state playoffs.
The win advances the Hurricanes to the second round with Flomaton traveling to Winfield this Friday night.
"We played a very good Montgomery Academy team," said Flomaton head coach Doug Vickery. "I thought we played really well on both sides of the football.
"The defense played extremely well," Vickery added. "We held them to their lowest point total of the season. They came into the game averaging 38 points a game."
Flomaton's defense forced six Montgomery Academy with Bradley picking off three passes and forcing the two fumbles that were recovered by Flomaton. Quincy McCall had the other interception."
Flomaton led 14-7 at the half but came out strong and took control in the second half.
"In the second half we came out and moved the ball on their defense," Vickery said. "It was a great effort and our coaching staff did an excellent job preparing the team."
Winfield comes into Friday night's game with an 11-0 record on the season.
"They are undefeated and the top seed in their region," Vickery said. "They are a speed team that likes to run out of the spread, but can also throw the ball well. We just need to stay focused and play our game."
For those traveling to the game, Coach Vickery said the game will not be played at Winfield High School but at another stadium located at 418 Apple Ave., in Winfield. Kick off against Winfield will be 7 p.m.
The night's scoring began when Johnson connected with Da'Shun Odom on a 2-yard touchdown pass with 6:39 left in the first. Odom kicked the PAT and the Hurricanes were up 7-0.
It didn't take the Eagles long to answer with a 3-yards touchdown pass and kicking the ball through the uprights for a good PAT. With 3:16 left in the first the Eagles tied the game 7-7.
Flomaton pulled ahead with 8:19 left in the second quarter with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Odom. Odom's kick for the PAT was good bringing the score to 14-7 with the teams heading into the lockerroom at the half.
The Hurricanes added to their lead in the third quarter by an explosive run by Odom who picked up a fumble and ran the ball 62-yards. Odom's PAT kick was true bringing the score to 21-7 with 9:39 on the clock.
Montgomery Academy answered with a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:54 left to play in the third. The PAT kick was good and brought the game within a touchdown with the scoreboard showing 21-14.
Flomaton's Johnson crossed the goal line next with a 47-yard run. The kicked PAT was no good but the Hurricanes had extended their lead to 27-14 with 3:09 left in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Johnson broke away with a 14-yard touchdown run. Again, the kicked PAT was no good but Flomaton was up 33-14 with 10:30 left to play.
The final score of the game, came from an impressive 74-yard touchdown run from Johnson bringing the score to 39-14 with 9:47 left in the fourth quarter. Odom kicked the PAT and the Hurricanes won 40-14.
Flomaton had 234 rushing yards and 60 yards through the air with a total of 294 yards total offense. Montgomery Academy rushed for 17 yards and passed for 309 with a total of 326 total offense in Friday's game.
