Hurricanes storm Winfield to advance

Flomaton raced to a 19-0 halftime lead Friday night in Winfield in the second round of the Class 3A state playoffs and left with a 32-7 victory that sends the Hurricanes to the third round of the playoffs this Friday night at Pike County.

Tensions rose at the end of the game with the previously undefeated Pirates losing their first game of the season, but Flomaton head coach Doug Vickery said “everything's good.”

“I don't think they had really been tested before,” Vickery said. “They hadn't played in a region like we played all year.”

Despite the victory, Vickery said he didn't think the offense or defense played very well early, but came together.

“We knew going in they had a senior-laden team and the weather hurt us last week in practice,” Vickery said. “But once our offense got in sync they found a way to win.”

Flomaton enters the quarter finals of the playoffs for the sixth time in history this Friday night at Pike County. Coach Vickery was the head coach for four of those trips.

“I first want to thank the Flomaton fans who showed up Friday night and I hope they show up this Friday night,” he said. “It means a lot to the football team.”

“It's Thanksgiving week and I'm thankful for this team reaching the quarter finals,” he added.

Flomaton was led by quarterback Daquan Johnson who rushed for 238 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 122 yards and two touchdowns, accounting for 360 of Flomaton's 431 yards of total offense.

Flomaton opened the scoring with 5:36 left in the first quarter when Johnson connected with Bailey Bass on an 18-yard touchdown pass. Da'Shun Odom added the PAT and the Canes led 7-0.

Johnson later scored on a 41-yard touchdown run with 3:00 left in the first quarter. Odom's PAT was no good, but Flomaton had a 13-0 lead at the end of the first.

With 1:41 left in the half, Johnson appeared to be trapped behind the line of scrimmage but found Quincie McCall in the end zone for a touchdown pass. A two-point try failed but the Hurricanes took a 19-0 lead into the lockerroom at the half.

Winfield's Joesph Cox scored the lone Winfield touchdown with 5:04 left in the third quarter. Winfield was facing a fourth and 1 at the Flomaton 6-yard line and stuffed the Pirate run, but the Canes were flagged for offsides giving Winfield a first down at the 4. Cox scored from 4 yards out and the PAT kick cut the lead to 19-7.

Winfield attempted an onsides kick that didn't go 10 yards and Flomaton took possession at its own 45.

Flomaton marched toward the end zone and Johnson found the end zone from 1-yard out. The two-point try failed, but Flomaton had stretched its lead to 25-7.

Flomaton put the game away with 10:49 left to play when Johnson scored again on a 1-yard run. Odom added the PAT to the final score of 32-7.
