New scholarship offered in tech

A new scholarship has been established in memory of Jerry Garrett.

Garrett died in 2016 at the age of 61 and was a resident of Castleberry for many years and worked with his hands, according to his daughter, Michelle Blackburn.

“Dad was known for being a jack of all trades and a source of knowlege for anyone, whether he could fix something or direct people where to go to have something repaired,” said Blackburn.

“With this scholarship, we are trying to help people become educated, in a very small way, and reward people who will be our future tradesmen,” said Blackburn. “Young people today do not work with their hands anymore, like people of my Dad’s generation did.”

Blackburn said she is working with Reid State College recently to establish a scholarsip at their school, and the school agreed to publicize the availability of the scholarship for potential recipients.

The purpose of the award is to find adults who have decided to enrich their lives and the lives of others by serving in a technical field of study, such as air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, auto repair or welding. It is geared to assist with school expenses needed to prepare the applicant for his field of work. This scholarship is aimed at helping adults, particularly those who have obtained their GED instead of a traditional high school graduate, although those who obtained diplomas are eligible as well.

The Jerry Garrett Memorial Scholarship hopes to help those who like to work with their hands and provide assistance toward obtaining the technical skills necessary to continue being a productive member of society.

Each scholarship will be $250-$350 depending on the field of study. This year the committee will be awarding three scholarships. There is hope that this number will increase each year.

Applications can be obtained at the Atmore Campus of Coastal Community College. Applications will be accepted through January 6, 2019. Requirements are that applicants earn less than $75,000 (joint) gross income and be enrolled and activley pursuing a technical filed of study.
