Santa, bikers deliver Toyz

Toyz for Kidz Ride delivers Christmas for 65 children, 16 families

Although the weather was cold and rainy, the 18th Annual Toyz for Kidz Ride on Saturday, Dec. 8, brought gifts from Santa to about 65 kids from 16 local families, one that included 12 children.

The toys and hams were purchased with funds raised from an annual auction at Pee Wee's Construction in Atmore every fall plus private donations throughout the year.

About 65 motorcycle riders from the L.A. Bikers battled the wind and rain to make this Christmas a little warmer for children and their families.

New bicycles, all kinds of toys, games, clothes, and many other gifts were the order of the day, as more than 30 motorcycles and several in cars traveled from David's Catfish in Atmore, made the rounds to several towns, then back to Atmore City Hall before finishing up the day with lunch at CWC (Pee Wee's) Construction.

"Each family received a ham also," said Jody Jeter, daughter of Pee Wee Powell. "We have families they buy for specifically, so they get what they really want from their wish list."

Jeter said as soon as the want list is established, a shopping trip is planned to purchase the items.

"At a certain time, we meet at Davids, and start the ride," said Jeter. "First stop is Bratt Elementary, where we meet the families. Then to Flomaton, where we meet those families. Then we head back to Atmore City Hall and meet more families from that area, and give them their gifts. The kids open their gifts in front of us. It's like having three Christmases in one day."

Jeter said a small group of individuals started the give away in 2000 and it began to get bigger every year since, bringing many return riders and others who wanted to participate.

She said what's really neat is that the kids involved get gifts that they've actually asked for, which makes it very special for the youngsters who participate.

"It keeps the spirit of Santa alive," said Jeter.
