State releases report card for all schools
The State of Alabama released the its state report card results last Thursday for all school systems, and according to the Alabama State Department of Education website, Escambia County (Ala.) schools repeated last year's score of a “C” with a 79 compared to last year's 78, and the Brewton City School System overall scored an “A” with a numerical score of 91 compared to last year's 86 and a “B”.
Flomaton High School and both Flomaton and Huxford Elementary Schools earned a “B”, while numerical scores improved across the board.
Escambia County High School, Middle School, Pollard-McCall Junior High, Rachel Patterson and all three W.S. Neal schools earned a “C” letter grade, while all numerical scores improved across the board. Escambia County High School earned a “C” this year, up from a “D” last year.
Brewton Middle and Elementary Schools both earned a “B”, while T.R. Miller High School earned an “A”.
Although letter grades stayed the same as last year's report, the numerical scores improved for several schools.
With the traditional system of a numerical score of 90 to 100 “A”, 80 to 89 “B”, 70 to 79 “C”, etc., incremental improvements made each year may take a school system a while to move up to the next higher letter grade.
Based on such factors as academic achievement, academic growth, graduation rates, college and career ready data, chronic absenteeism and other factors, Escambia County Superintendent of Education John Knott referred to the reports as a snapshot of what is going, it does not tell the whole story.
“I like to remind everyone we have things going on in the schools that cannot be determined by a letter grade,” said Knott. “We work hard on building character and life skills that will take out students throughout their adult life.”
Knott was pleased with the overall improvement and said he looks forward to seeing more improvements as each year's state report card will show the teachers' and students' hard work.
“We've been going over the data and formulating the plans to continue to see growth,” said Knott. “We are continuing to grow and we want to see that continue. At Escambia County High School and Escambia County Middle School, I am glad to see the continued growth there. Flomaton schools had quite a bit of growth, and we really pleased with their achievement. We've got areas we see we will need to work on to get as much improvement out as we can. We will continue moving in upward direction, I expect to see our schools grow and school system grow.”
