Watching Democrats wrestle with presidential losers who just won’t go away has been amusing, but to the consternation of most Republicans, they have one now too. Failed 2012 Republican Presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, is trying to stage some kind of awkward comeback to the national scene by maligning his party’s president. Apparently since John McCain is gone, the job was open.
But first an aside, where did this garbage concept of American aristocracy come from where our self-anointed nobility scour the nation for open royal titles? Until now, Hillary Clinton was the most notable mobile noble. She left Chicago for Arkansas to snag a husband governor and then president, but when it was “her turn” she suddenly moved to New York for an easy open Senate seat.
Mitt Romney was born in Michigan where his Dad was governor; he moved to Massachusetts to be governor. OK, so Massachusetts was his new home state until he needed an open Senate seat and voila, he moved to Utah hoping his Mormon roots would carry him into the Senate and they did. This nonsense of picking winnable Senate seats is counter to the whole Constitutional concept which was Senators represented “their” home states at large. It seems to becoming more of an NFL draft.
Senator-elect Romney must have wanted everyone to know he is back in Washington. No one in Washington particularly the press cares about another Republican Senator unless of course you are willing castigate President Trump. Then you have an audience in the swamp, so the Washington Post giddily published Romney’s anti-Trump screed.
Romney criticizes Trump for cabinet departures, his decision to withdraw troops from Syria, and his “thoughtless claim” America has long been a “sucker” in world affairs. So what if cabinet officials decide to leave, it happens regularly. With ISIS eradicated in Syria, Romney should explain the national interest there worth American lives. America sends BILLIONS in aid to countries that return the favor by harboring terrorists, sending hordes of migrants to violate our immigration laws, or defending ungrateful Europeans who won’t share in their own defense while stabbing us in the back with unfair trade policies. So Mitt, what is your definition of a “sucker?”
Romney inexplicably cites polls of western Europeans and Canadians that liked Obama and hate Trump. Obama was a cool guy that demanded nothing and was willing to give everything, but Trump demands compliance and performance. Go figure; they liked the sucker better. Who cares what Europeans think? They are working on their third major screw up of the continent in a century. By the way, read Trump’s 2018 address to the United Nations; that was the epitome of American leadership the globe sorely needs.
Romney blames Trump for the nation being “divided, resentful, and angry.” Hey Mitt, did you miss the Obama years? The nation was constantly roiled by regular race riots and the Republicans were so shut out of governing, Tea Parties sprang up across the nation taking to the streets demanding to be heard. And since Trump was elected, the press never gave him chance maniacally pouring gas on every Trump hater’s fire. Vicious Democrats, incompetent Republicans, and biased vindictive media have thoroughly frustrated Americans. Trump hoped Romney would be a team player, but Mitt chose the other team.
Perhaps Romney is eyeing another run in 2020 because he tries to present himself as that steady wise leader when he admonishes Trump to defend our “vital institutions” like a free press and the rule of law. Trump never said he opposes them, but he pointedly criticizes the press for abandoning objective journalism for agenda driven propaganda and the Department of Justice for being hopelessly corrupt and bereft of integrity. Trump wants them to do their duty and Romney wants to let them hide their gross failures behind long ago forgotten ideals.
Romney takes a snarky jab that Trump has “failed to rise to the mantle of the office;” meaning the president should be the font of civility and moderation. But that’s the problem in Washington. The politicians especially Republicans hide behind decorum and dignity to ignore the people and do NOTHING. Americans are tired of nice ineffective leaders; that’s why Trump was elected – he gets things done.
Most folks thought Romney was a decent man, but this petty poking at the man in the arena so he can crow about his ideals to get attention for his not so triumphant return exposes him as just another Flake. He is telling us he will throw the swamp a lifeline by the reversing Republicans’ course. Hopefully Utah already has remorse; reject retro Romney.
