Progress sometimes hurts. When the state or county has to shut down roads to make repairs it can cause hardships for people who use those roads on a daily basis, whether going to school, work or simply to the grocery store.
But those repairs are necessary for the safety of those traveling those roads. People will be inconvenienced the rest of this week and until Tuesday with the closure of the Escambia County (Ala.) Circuit Clerk's office due to repairs and renovations. Progress hurts sometimes. Circuit Clerk John Robert Fountain will be checking the mail daily. If you have a speeding ticket that needs to be paid during this time, go to the post office mail a check and everything will be fine.
One thing we're not sure will be fine is the so-called bridge to nowhere in Riverview. The project for a new bridge was halted because inspectors wouldn't give the concrete decking a passing grade. Our understanding that when that bridge will be completed is tied up in the courts or at least being talked about through lawyers and insurance companies.
That's all fine and dandy. If we build a new bridge it needs to be built right and it needs to be built to the highest standards.
The bridge is being built because the other bridge didn't pass the test. We are having problems getting answers about the next step.
If you think closing Butler Street for a few days was an inconvenience, wait until the current bridge in Riverview is condemned and the new bridge isn't open. Or worse case scenario is when a log truck is traveling across the old bridge and it falls in.
We're not pointing fingers yet, but somebody needs to bite the bullet and get the new bridge completed before we have to shut down the existing bridge.
Law suits about who's at fault can come later. We'd hate to know that someone trying to come to Brewton would have to go through Jay to get there or someone trying to get from Brewton to the airport would have to go through Jay.
Tell us what's going on.
