Canes fall 13-1 in opener

“We didn't play well all around,” is how Flomaton High School head baseball coach Wes Sessions explained the Hurricanes' 13-1 loss to T.R. Miller Tuesday night in the season opener at the county tournament.

“I've got higher expectations than what we did last night,” Sessions said Wednesday. “We've got seven seniors and we're still looking forward to a great year. This one game won't define us.”

Sessions said the Canes didn't put the ball into play but five times, committed five errors and struck out eight or nine times looking at fastballs.

“We've just got to be more aggressive at the plate,” he said. “We need to jump on those fastballs. I understand physical errors are going to occur, but we didn't seem focused.”

He did note he just recently got a few players out who played basketball and haven't had enough time swinging the bat, but added that was no excuse.

“We're better than what we showed,” he said.

In the first game of the county tournament played in Atmore, W.S. Neal defeated Escambia County High School 14-4.

Flomaton will be back in action today (Thursday), weather permitting, at 4 p.m. against W.S. Neal. The county tournament will wrap up Friday with the Hurricanes taking on Escambia County High School at 6 p.m.

Flomaton will play its first home game of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 26, against J.U. Blacksher with the junior varsity playing at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 6 p.m. The Canes will travel to Jay on March 1 and return home on March 4 to host Northview.

Flomaton will faceoff against Bayside Academy and St. Michael's Academy in region play. The top two teams in the region will advance to the state playoffs. Flomaton travels to Bayside on March 21 for a single game and will host Bayside March 22 for a double header.

The Hurricanes will travel to St. Michael's on April 11 for a single game and play a double header at home on April 12 to wrap up the regular season.
