Two are arrested in separate traffic stops by East Brewton police

Two separate traffic stops in East Brewton resulted in two men going to jail after police found illegal drugs in their possession.

On March 10 Ricky Joe Rowell, 38, 121 Virginia St., East Brewton, was arrested following a traffic stop and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), unlawful possession of a controlled substance (spice) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to police reports Cpl. Brandon Mealer and Officer Charles Land initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle on Highway 41 for having no tag.

Police reported while they were talking to the driver Cpl. Mealer noticed the passenger, later identified as Rowell, moving around.

The K-9 did not alert on the vehicle but a search of Rowell revealed a digital scale and a blue sack containing spice, 4.6 grams of meth and two pipes in his underwear.

Damien Christopher Howard, 40, 91 Ball Lane, Brewton, was arrested March 13 and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance (Lortab), unlawful possession of marijuana II, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, promoting prison contraband and tampering with evidence.

According to reports, Cpl. Mealer made a traffic stop on Highway 41 for speeding and made contact with the driver, later identified as Howard. The officer reported smelling the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and a subsequent search revealed a small amount of marijuana in the center console and a Lortab pill and more marijuana in a backpack in the passenger seat.

Howard was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton and was found to be in possession of a pill bottle containing marijuana residue in his underwear.
