Two arrested for burglaries

A multi-agency investigation led to the arrest of an 18-year old Atmore teenager and a 17-year old juvenile on charges stemming from a rash of burglaries in Atmore and across the line in Florida.

Jylyn Kevon Cooper, 18, 69 Harris St., was arrested April 15 and charged with receiving stolen property IV, receiving stolen property II, unlawful possession of marijuana II and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. The 17-year old, whose name was not released due to his age, was charged with receiving stolen property III.

Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks said Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff's deputies contacted the Atmore Police Department about a suspect in a break-in on McElhaney Road in Florida.

"They gave us a description of the vehicle and it turns out it matched a case we were working on in Atmore," Brooks said.

Investigators with the Atmore Police Department, Alabama Drug Enforcement and the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at Cooper's house at 6:53 a.m. Monday and placed him and the juvenile under arrest.

Brooks said officers located stolen firearms, narcotics and other items during the search.

"It's an on-going investigation by multiple agencies into burglaries on both sides of the line," Brooks said. "We expect more arrests."

Brooks said most of the burglaries in Atmore have been at homes and encourages people to report suspicious activity.

"Call the police department, call 911, we'd rather show up and it be nothing that to have someone breaking into a vehicle or a house," Brooks said.
