Giving Back

Several former Flomaton residents came back home Saturday to spearhead a fun-filled day at Oaks Common Park to show their gratitude over the park's improvement and its current and future impact on young lives.

Flomaton Councilwoman Lillian Dean said Jessica Carter, owner of Jessica No. 1 Catering in Pensacola, Raymond Spears, Jevon Pleasant and James and Edward Wesley grew up in Flomaton, attended school in Flomaton and now live in Pensacola.

"They wanted to come back and give thanks to the community that helped launch them to what they have become," Dean said.

She said the Wesley brothers came up with the idea to have a fun day at the park, full of music, games and plenty of great food. The event was free to those who attended.

Dean said Carter brought an abundance of salads and sweets and the Wesley brothers, Spears and Pleasant manned the barbecue pit throughout the day.

Oaks Common Park was established in 2014 on Martin Luther King Drive in Flomaton.

Dean said everything served at the event was free, but they did ask for donations to go to the family of 4-year old Ka-merius J. Dortch, who was killed in a tragic accident last Wednesday night outside the Century Community Center.

More than 200 people showed up for the special day that included many children's activities and an Easter Egg hunt. ATV riders from Flomaton (Escambia Riders) and Monroeville (Tru Riders) also showed their support by attending the event.

"It would be impossible to help each individually," said James Wesley. "But those who come come and bring the bread that would be broken for all to enjoy."

Dean said the group plans on making this an annual event in Flomaton to show their gratitude for how Flomaton helped raise them as children.
