James Alfred Burkett, 89, of Atmore, died Friday, April 26, 2019 at West Florida Regional Hospital in Pensacola.
Mr. Burkett was born Feb. 24, 1930, to Claude and Patti Burkett. A U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean Conflict, he retired from Monsanto. He was a longtime member of Presley Street Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, as well as numerous other positions throughout the years.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 29, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home with Revs. Joseph Simpson and Dempsey Bell officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery with Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Burkett is survived by one daughter, Virginia Gail Bell; one sister, Hazel (Lavon) Smith; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and numerous other nephews, nieces and other family members.
Mr. Burkett was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Georgia Earline Burkett; one son, Gary Alfred (Donna) Burkett; one brother, Roy Lee (Betty) Burkett; two sisters, Pauline (Ralph) Womack and an infant sister, Helen Burkett.
